Is it my PSU causing this issue? Please enlighten me!

Hey guys,

Since my new setup i have been having these issues..

First off, when I was changing components around, and tried to boot up, it would start, after a few seconds, turn off, then reboot, repeat, repeat, repeat.

So I unplugged the power to the GPU and back in, and it booted up after that..

Second, now when I power down, as the tower turns off it makes a loud "clank" or "noise" which I think is coming from the PSU.

Its a cheap EVGA 600W White PSU, and I apologize I made the cardinal mistake of not buying a better PSU :(

Does this sound like a PSU concern or something else, apart from that the PC is running good.

I have seen PSU's that make a small slick that sounds like a relay type of thing. I have heard them make this noise both on shutdown and on powerup. Found this on youtube, you can just about hear it after the initial powerdown clunk.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. It's a bit like the noise old TV's used to make and is probably something to do with the initial step-down process.

Telling how old that PSU is would have been good...
But capacitors might have been worn out and disconnecting PC from power just brought up the symptoms.
Ironically while heat lowers life of capacitors (especially cheap ones can be very volatile) it can also keep bad caps working just enough.
But when PC is disconnected from power/wall they cool and PSU kicks the bucket.
Neighbour had one standard capacitor PSU cook up to coold boot problem state in some four years:
Instead of properly booting with first press of power button it started needing multiple presses/"warm up" time before PC would boot.
(original bundled PSU of the case with über crap Fuhjyyu caps lasted ~5 months before having something give popping noise inside it)

So wouldn't wonder any if cheap PSU reached its design goal... of failure state.

I think pretty much about remotely modern PSUs use relay to bypass power on surge limiting NTC resistor.
When PC powers down that relay just returns to it unpowered state.

Thanks guys,

Sorry about not mentioning the life of the PSU, its only 3 weeks old !!:eek:

But I have just installed a new EVGA GQ 750W semi-mod PSU and booted up straight away, no messing about with power cables, "juggling things around"

Would have to be god darn awfully bad caps for them to fail that fast.
Though during "capacitor plague" some of them self destructed spontaneously without use that should be 10+ years in the past.

There's likely something else wrong in that 600W PSU.
Who knows if it's some construction weakness or it's been banged up too much during transportation chain from factory...
