Is it my Q6600 or my motherboard that has expired?

Switched the pc off last night after some gaming and now it wont boot

push the 'on' button and it makes all the usual starting up noises, fans come on and the dvd drives starts

BUT

it doesnt even get to the post screen and it powers off again (repeat ad nauseum)
the display on the main board shows CPU INIT (its a Maximus Formula) but never gets past that.

I'm guessing that the CPU has died. it was clocked but only lightly (3.1ghz) and water cooled so shouldve been fine.
I've tried it stripped of all components, memory etc etc but no change:rolleyes:

ok cmos cleared using the handy cmos button and the 'remove batter - replace battery' method. still the same after :(

checked the cpu and reseated with new AS5 tim no signs of fryup (never toasted a cpu before so no idea if a crispy one is visible/obvious)
still the same after :(

tried pulling and swapping the sticks of ram around
still the same after :( even with no ram in
should at least get to the initial stages of bios

Stuck at CPU init , the first step in the cycle, not even getting to the vga step :(

the worst bit is 2-3 weeks ago I sold a striker extreme, E6450 and some XM2 ram all known working complete with my spare enermax psu.

to everyone that keeps spares.......sometimes they do come in handy......
guess I'm going to need to borrow a working pc that I can mix n match parts with.

oh burger:rolleyes:

ok is deffo not the psu or memory as I've swapped em into a running machine and they test ok, plus known good memory and psu give same results in sick machine ascurrent components :(
its either cpu or m/b

my money is now on m/b as its an ASUS  (experiences with striker extremes left scars bone deep)
