im thinking that this is the answer but i want to make sure, as i have no money (thank you £900 car bill +xmas ) but i've got serious problem basically my PC is just locking up and the screen goes fuzzy and the screengoes black and i get the message "display driver stopped responding and recovered"

im not 100% pc savvy and my first thoughts are that my pc is dying

PC specs are

Dell XPS 420

Intel Duo E8500 @3.16
4Gb RAM
AMD Radeon HD 3800

Anything else you need to know i'll try my best to answer

Have you tried updating to latest version of your drivers? Sounds like the driver is spacking out, but it could be caused by the card at the same time.

ATI Driver issues = wipe it, reinstall windows.

I've now had this kind of issue 3/4 times, every time I've ended up just formatting it and making it all nice again.

that's the route I usually take , as there is a separate partition for a clean install but for some reason it won't let me do that either.

You need to see what temps your card is running at, using HWMonitor or something, MSI Afterburner if you've got it installed already

Doesn't really matter what you're doing, the 3800's quite an old card now and I doubt you bought it new in the last year or so or if they even make them. I have an 8400 in my server PC and it was doing the same thing yours was doing, except much quicker.. and that was just idling. I had to leave it a while before checking temps, it was idling at over 80c!

So I took the heatskink off and well...

Looking a bit baron dont you think?

I put some thermal paste on, now all is peachy.. infact its been on for over three days straight and it's idling at 48c.. which is lower than when I first applied the paste, must have settled I guess :)

For me if I was in your position, I'd try find out what the current idle temps are or what the temps are when the comp dies. You can often in programs set the temp monitor to record a log file, so check that after a fail. You ideally want to check as many temps of components as possible, cpu, hdd, mobo, gfx.. what ever you can as anything could be causing other components to rise ambiently. I dont know what case you've got, could be like an oven if one part is overheating.

Or just go straight for it and remove the heat sink, there will be a guide somewhere on how to do it.. though its usually pretty straight forward

cheers for the response, the case isn't the best cooling wise but I do keep the side open and its getting plenty of airflow, so I would like to think its not a heat issue but will check to make sure, any programs worth trying out ?
