Is it normal for GPUs to go up to 99% usage in BF3?

As the title says i have been monitoring usage on my 7970 as i get lag every now and a game but have good ping and over 100fps on medium quality and my CPU is i5 2500k @4.4ghz just wondering why i stil get a bit of lag, would capping or v-sync help?
Thanks

Try turning v-sync on and see if it helps I guess?
I appreciate the reply but doesn't that cause mouse lag? i have a 120hz monitor
Its strange it has been smooth so wonder as well if it could be there end or im getting spikes for some reason.
Also will capping at say 80fps cause less stress?
Thanks

In game vsync on bf3 is really good for me no input lag at all (660ti)

Could possibly be your 2500k as bf3 online is very cpu heavy. I would try online with something less cpu heavy like an outdoor map and see if it still does it.

Also check pingtest.net for packet loss or jitter. http://pingtest.net/
You need 0 packet loss and jitter of less than 5.

Any time I get lag its normally server issue,

as for your Gpu being at 99%, mine are at 97-99%
so I'd say don't worry as everything is working as it should

Yeah but its been fine for a while with my cpu so seems something new also i use pingtest and that seems fine just bugging me a bit thanks

Since the GPU is the prime determinant of the framerate you get in a game, you would want the GPU usage to be the highest possible as that would mean that there is nothing bottlenecking the GPU itself. The GPU is the bottleneck (ideal scenario).

99% means you're getting the expected performance. You might have been alarmed because prior to the AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta drivers, GPU usage in BF3 was less; well, now, it's been given the needed performance boost and that's why you see that high GPU usage.

Ok thanks using HWinfo64 it's saying CPU is around 75% usage.

GPU usage at 99% is perfectly normal, it basically means that your GPU is the bottleneck for the settings that you are using.

Personally I cap games at 120fps (using afterburner if necessary) and if gpu usage is still 99% which it often is in modern games then overclock my gfx card.

75% cpu usage on a quad core is also pretty high as well so all in all it would indicate you have a fairly well balanced system.

Everything is working well and it is probably the server causing the lag. I have been on a few servers where the ping is low but still got server lag (ping all over the place).

That's impressive. I am guessing you are gaming at 1080p res. 99% gpu usage means game is making good use of your pc resources and this is what you want ideally anyway.

With my Q9650@4Ghz and 5850 I get 45-55 Fps (average) on medium settings. Cpu usage is around 85% (average) and gpu usage is around 96% (average)

Makes me wonder if cpu or gpu is the weaker link at these settings? hmm

Yeah this is what I thought aswell. However if I were to replace 5850 with 7970, how much performance improvement would I see considering the fact that 7970 is more than twice as powerful as 5850 whilst keeping rest of the settings same?

I would have thought the Q9650 @ 4.0Ghz would have done a better job with a 5850.

Total guess but in BF3, I would expect your GPU usage to be no more than 70%.

I think it's not the cpu but rather the whole 775 architecture which is showing it's age with modern games. Imo the FSB (both gpu and memory data share FSB ) along with external memory controller (northbridge) contribute significantly to overall bottlenecking in the system :(

Good point. The 775 was good in its day but showing its age now.

Hi thanks for all the replies, after some googling i found out if you cap your fps or use V-sync your cpu usage goes down. For instance if i cap at 70fps on high my cpu usage goes down to 58%-65%, thought i would add that just for people that didn't know.May come in handy when using capture programs.
Thanks
