Is it now worth upgrade to 5600x from 2700 gaming only

Got a 5600x on order for £223

I game at 4k with an rtx3080

Currently have a b450 mb and amd 2700 cpu

Is it now time to upgrade

At 4K, the CPU doesn't affect the framerate.

You need to upgrade later, maybe next 2-3 years with a whole new platform and a faster graphics card.

That 10 GB card is not good.

It would have been better to ask something like "How can I find out whether my CPU needs upgrading?" So you can learn how to understand the signs yourself and upgrade when needed because a simple yes/no answer won't teach you anything.

Do you ever monitor your framerate and check your CPU and GPU utilisation? It will tell you a lot about what is happening inside your computer during gameplay. If the CPU is maxed out at 100% while your GPU is underutilised at 60% then that would mean your CPU needs upgrading because it's not letting your GPU run at full potential.

You may find that the 2700 is okay at 4k because today's GPUs can't deliver high enough framerates at that resolution to max out a fast CPU.

I went from a 4.1GHz 2600 to the 5600x. Massive upgrade, 3080 can stretch it's legs far better especially in the 1 and 0.1% lows

Generally in most cases, your gpu will be the bottleneck at 4k, not the cpu. Going from a 2700 to 5600x won't see much of a difference, if any, depending on the cpu-intensity of the game.

If you play grand strategy, 4k doesn't matter and the gpu doesn't either, getting a faster cpu will nearly all go straight to performance improvement. For pretty much any other game, this won't cause much of a change.

you will see difference. you could always try it then return it if...you not happy with it.

do me a favour. benchmarks you games now. then after you upgrade. show the fps difference. its a good thing to do. shows what you gain.;)

Ever played Arma 3, DCS or FS2020?

ARMA 3 was one of the driving factors behind me upgrading from my i7-3770k to a 5600X. Whilst the i7-3770k was actually pretty good for single thread performance for its time, the 5600X seemed like a good choice to improve in this specific area.

I was previously getting about an average of 28fps in ARMA 3 even with some mods installed and this was at 3440x1440 @ 144Hz. (EDIT: it could drop to 15 fps during heavy firefights with lots of units) I did have to do a lot of research on all the graphics settings and spend a lot of time tweaking (including changing game files) to achieve this though.

Since building my 5600X system I've not played ARMA 3 yet, but it's 89% downloaded and looking forward to seeing any improvements. I'll be using the same GTX 1600 Super but a new MB and better RAM as well.

The average framerate above 1440p and even to an extent at 1440p won't be night and day different but the minimums will be significantly better even at 4K.

Since you got the 5600X for a decent price then you might aswell drop it in and sell the 2700X, it won't be much of an improvement right now but it going forward you probably would have needed to upgrade at some point in the future anyway.

@ OP i would use the newer chip and sell the 2700x.

Minimums appear to still be better with Intel sometimes from what i have seen, maybe not so much now though. Like with the 8700k AMD was still behind even with the 3000 series chips. Reviewers like Gamers Nexus don't often seem to bring it up though for some reason?

AMD caught up mostly, but it took them a while to get there.

Gonna be interesting to see the gains with Alder Lake, though i most likely won't be buying any next gen stuff until Raptor Lake or most likely Meteor Lake or Zen 4, depends which brings the biggest leap the soonest, i won't do a full platform change for less than <20%. 20-30% possibly yes. First gen stuff probably won't be the best thing to buy into with expensive and slower DDR5 for a start though. Better to hold with a newer chip on current stuff until a year or so after the new gen.

Fired ARMA 3 up and my God what a difference; I'm getting between 80-100fps where there is no action, I called in 60 paratroopers (which would normally kill the fps) but it still gives me around 60fps. Even with a napalm strike it only temporarily drops to around 35fps. But here's the surprising bit, this is on ultra settings 4k ultra wide - which is what it was automatically recommending. I turned off the AA as I don't need it at 4k.

The GPU was hitting 100% (and reaching 85°C) as was one of the threads with the CPU whilst the other threads were a combination of loads, some high and some low but not hitting 100%. I'm guessing the CPU and MB is unlocking a little extra power with the GPU as well? CPU, MB and Case temps were decent though.

ARMA 3 is finally playable and enjoyable!

My spec is in my sig, I just fired up MSFS for a flight over London city, MSFS is most probably the most demanding sim i play, Settings are high/Ultra, 1440p, Totally stutter free, Maximum 62% CPU usage and 100% GPU usage according to HWinfo, Yeah crappy old R7 2700 and Vega56! I always have the itch to upgrade like you lot, TBH I'm happy to keep this rig for a while longer, Play the long game and see what pans out in the future!
