Is it possible and am I right?

I use Netgear Homeplug adapters to get wireless in my office and have been for about 6 months.

Suddenly they seem to be causing me serious packet loss and ping latency.

Now my first question is; Is it possible that installing a dimmer switch in a room downstairs could affect the homeplugs signal to each other? As in the one broadcasting the wireless and the one downstairs connected to the router?

and my second question is my thinking right here:

This is how I am connected

[router]--wired ethernet---[1st home plug]/\/\power line/\/\[2nd home plug]<<wireless>>[PC]

So from my PC I ping the 2nd home plug which is broadcasting the signal in my office. Getting an constant <1ms reply.

At the same time I ping the router downstairs, this time getting anything from 3ms to 800ms and some time outs.

SO..... am I right in thinking this indicates it is some kind of intereference on the power line rather than a wireless thing?

Please forgive me if I am not making sense.

If your house has been wired properly then your lighting and power should be on different circuits.

You can test your theory easily enough, just turn off the dimmer switch and see if it makes a difference.

I would be inclined to suspect something other than the dimmer like a fridge or freezer perhaps or a central heating pump.

Assuming single phase supply, although on different circuits they are all connected together at the distribution box via fuses / circuit breakers so are effectively connected together.

Any electrical noise anywhere on the mains wiring (or induced into the mains wiring from other sources) will therefore be distributed throughout the building.

With three phase you could indeed have separate circuits.

Disconnect the dimmer and re-test.
