Is it possible to have my own PC (running Windows 7) and use active directory to manage say 3 or 4 virtual boxes if I put the virtual box machines on a network?
My job involves knowing Active Directory so was thinking of setting up a couple of machines (probably Linux virtual boxes) and adding them in to AD and seeing what I can and cannot do and basically teach myself. Couldn't really find anything useful online so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great :-)

Yeah perfectly possible, what virtulization software are you using?

In VMware workstation & hyper-v you just create a bridged the network using the host's network card

I'm using Oracle VM VirtualBox mate. I'm just setting up 3 machines all with Ubuntu on, and then set them up as 3 seperate 'users' and see what I can do. A lot of my work involves AD, I know the basics but I want to learn things like group policies and objects. I don't know a great deal about VirtualBox, but enough tutorials out there for me to use. I'm learning Linux at the moment, and Vi which I'm hoping I can do something with as I want to start working with servers at our place too

I've not use the Oracle VM software (have more experience with vmware), but the principles are normally, somewhere in the network configurations it should give you an option of bridging the virtual network to the hosts network card

I'm doing pretty much the same thing at home, using Hyper-V (only because it's built in to Windows 8.1) to generate a virtual lab & it works really well enough to allow me to play with Server 2012 (although I've got 64GB of ram in my machine)
