Is it possible to be just a football fan?

Because that's what I'd consider myself. I enjoy watching the game and I've been to see Livingston, Hearts and even Southampton play but I don't think I support any team specifically. Sure I probably look out for the premiership teams and have an interest in my local teams and teams that I have a connection with in some way but if someone asked me 'What team do you support?' I'd have to say 'none'.

i like watching some teams more than others which I suppose is a little bit elitist but nothing beats Arsenal when they're in the mood or Barca's movement and quickness.

Can somoene be a fan of football but not support any specific team?

I'm like that for internationals, I just watch good football (naturally I then come to have an affinity for certain teams that play good football)

Further to this, can you support more than one club?

Also, if your club stinks over many seasons, surely they no longer deserve your support?

I never used to watch other games apart from the team I support (Newcastle).

But I have been watching most televised games this year and I'm really enjoying it. There have been some epic games in there too. And it's always a joy to watch Barca.

However, if you love football, you'll eventually back a team, you might start to find yourself cheering on a certain team whilst watching a game.

Stick with tradition. Support the team where you were raised even if they're crap, cos when they do something good you can say you were part of it rather than be a mindless glory hunter ;)

Oh and being just a fan of football, despite my allegance to Brechin, I'll still happily watch a game of football but if its a load of rubbish (overpaid premadonnas diving around cos a gust of wind touched them :p) or just plain boring (overpaid premadonnas who cant pass the ball) then I'll switch over.

When I was a kid I was just a fan of football, never supported one team. Wasn't till my late teens that I started to support one team from going a bit more often. Was helped by growing up near MK, my local teams till I was 13 were Northampton (who I have seen and hated it) and Bedford... Then the MK Dons turned up which was a good reason to hate just one team and like all of football away from them :D

Admittedly since iv been going more and more I watch less of the English teams in Europe but keep up with lower league stuff more.

The thing is, when I was younger, I believed that.

Then I grew up and got a job and a family and realised where my money was going, it put me off.

I used to be a Nottingham Forest fan because it is in my home town, but I have to admit to not liking the way they play, do not like the owners, do not like the manager, what is there to support?

I then stopped following football alltogether for over 15 years, it was a like a messy divorce. You devote yourself to a club, you realise that you can no longer support that club, I just cut myself off from the game completely.

Recently started liking football again and am now following Wigan of all teams - lol.

Well im italian and i know a guy who just supports anyone italian he watches all the league's and champions league. U get into football a lot more though if u follow someone i go crazy for Juve and the club is a huge part of my life.

I was wondering if one day fans will be fed up with merc players and managers and just become "football" fans as you say. Sack off a team when they are playing bad and just watch the good teams play good football.

I do like following Newcastle but I am getting to the stage where I don't let it get to me as much (not that you can tell by my posting :p) it literally used to ruin my life for a week if we lost :p These days I just watch football and can appreciate a good team rather than it just having to be Newcastle.

I'll watch most football on TV, and enjoy a lot of it, though I have come to really hate most of what happens now and have watched less recently. I generally couldn't care less who wins any game I watch though. In fact, I watch a lot more lower league football than Premiership now as well.

I find that when going to a game every week and actually supporting your club, I don't even care about performances or results(well I do, but it doesn't affect my support in any way, if you know what I mean)....that is how I feel anyway. You will rarely see me moaning about anything to do with the football we play, or a bad result.

I have been through far too much to ever abandon my team now!(been to 4 different home stadiums:()

I have more than one club that I support, and I watch a lot of games, not just the ones that involve teams I like/support.

forgot to reply to this one earlier.

I guess I'm actually quite lucky with my view of support the team that you grow up with because my club is owned by its season ticket holders with an elected committee made up of season ticket holders. No one person is in charge (yes there is a chairman) so its not like a lot of the big clubs where you've got a rich chairman calling the shots.

We've also been fairly fortunate in recent years with a string of decent managers Dick Campbell (back to back promotions 3rd Div to 1st Div) Michael O'Neil (current Northern Ireland boss) and now Ray McKinnon who's taken the team from 3rd bottom of the league to 3rd in the league and I think his run is about one loss in 11 league games in charge. Dont get me wrong though we've had mediocre and terrible managers, but thats what supporting your team is all about. putting up with the crap cos you know you'll be winning some day even if some days it doesn't feel like that!

The way the club is set up is regarded highly amongst the lower divisions and reflects that in the clubs ability to attract quality players (for this division) over the years and because we look after the players they tell other players who may look towards the club as a next move in their career.

From a personal point of view I was in the lucky enough position to be taking the photographs of both the first game involving the new rangers fc this season (historic in a weird sense) as well as the quarter final games of the scottish cup a couple of seasons back (historic in the fact that was the first time Brechin have reached that stage in the competition) and although I've wanted to celebrate any goals during the match like other fans I've been proud that i can capture history of the club i support.

Of course you can. I've been to many games that haven't involved Newcastle and still enjoyed it, but the passion, atmosphere and rush you get from following your team is unbeatable in comparison. Unbearable at times too, but I guess that's the risk you take when you're so emotionally invested.

Nothing better than an away day!

Yes to an extent.

There are matches that I watch where I simply dont care what happens, its not as much fun as watching a game where the result impacts against your team though, so you do lose something from it.

Nope you support YOUR club and thats it, being crap is no reason to not support them, there YOUR team and that's it, have to take the good with the bad.

Possibly the most ridiculous accepted wisdom in any sport. The fans idea that you have to have been born in the local area of a team to support them. In everything else, people simply do what gives them the most enjoyment but in football you are not a real fan if you don't love your local team above all else.

Support whoever you like the most. Im sure that most people have a few teams they root for regardless of being a supporter or not. I support Man Utd but I always want Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund to win.

Not going to lie, I used to love Barcelona's football but honestly its turned into a complete borefest for the most part.
