Is it possible to build a 1080p capable HTPC for under £500??

Hi,

I know computer specs etc get asked hourly on here but if a few people could reply or point me in the right direction I would be very greatful.

Without turning this in to a massive essay I want to be able to play my blu - ray movies from my computer and have media software (like plex) so it looks smart and works well.

I'd like a small case and black if possible. Its got to have an HDMI port and be able to play 1080p files without juddering etc.

My budget unfortunately is a measly £500 which needs to buy everything at least component wise as looking around windows is going to cost over £100 alone

I've tried spec'in one or two up on the overclockers shop page but struggling to get something that's going to be fairly decent for the money.

Thanks for your help.
Mark

I would like something based around an i3 cpu so it will keep me going for a while yet. I'm happy for now just to install say a 1tb hard drive and look at adding a few more in the future.

Even the cheapest pc will decode 1080p h.264 these days. Home premium is £70, basic £40, don't know where you got the £100 figure from.

Pick up a few 2nd hand bits and it's easy to come in below £500

I've got a AMD system that knocks the poop out of 1080 movies for £300

That spec should eat blu ray & 1080p for breakfast.

Thanks guys I've purchased the bits ended up spending £650 so far inc OS.

I'm going to look at cable braiding and swapping all the fans in pursuit of quietness.

Then I need to get some more 2tb hard drives!!

Little more than I wanted to spend but it should last a good few years, be easily upgradable and give me a nice insight to computer building :-)

personally i would have gone for an ION based system

plays 1080p without a problem.
it'll also use less power and be quieter which is good for a HTPC
all u need is ram/case/hdd for a complete system, can easly build one with about £300

u could have also gone for a linux based media center over windows and saved money on the OS as well.

with £500 u could get a perfectly capable HTPC that would be completly silent

Well I went a bit overboard and went for...

Lian li v354b case
Asus p7h55m 1156 mobo
Clarkedale 540 i3 3.06 CPU
Corsair 500w psu
Cosair ddr3 1333mhz 4gb ram
Samsung bd rom/dvd-rw
2 tb western digital hard drive
Windows 7 premium

Once I get it all together and running I will look at replacing the fans/coolers to quieten things down to a reasonable level.

I went for this case/mobo as I can fit 5 hard drives in offering 10 - 15tb of storage.

I also want to output dts hd master which I believe this set up can do??

May also look at adding a graphics card if this will improve the quality of the picture?

Cheers

Apparently it can hold upto 7 according to OcUK's website. Extremely OTT for a media centre. However I'm sure it will get used for a lot more than that now.

It can but my mobo only has 6 sata ports so 1 for odd and 5 for the hdd's.

10tb's should keep me going for a while I hope.

It's only going to store songs and films on it.

I'm not in to playing games on a pc so won't be used for that. It should last me a while hopefully in terms of a htpc

From looking at them graphs the SB cpu's are pretty untouchable.

As I say the specs I've chose should be plenty for a htpc for now! If in a year or two the SB CPUs are well and truly established I'll certainly look at swapping a few bits about!
