Hey all,

For my sons 12th birthday he has asked for a PC that can run Minecraft, this sounded easy to me at first but then I realised he plays on servers with hundreds of players and huge worlds, so performance is an issue.

Is it possible to build a PC that can handle this for £400 or less?

Cheers.

should have been a little more clear, no need for a screen. I have a decent spare one I can give him.

So just all the components for the box is needed. Plus Windows.

Being an Intel user through and through for my PC I really hadn't looked into the AMD CPUS... interesting.

Looks like they might save a load of money by not having to buy a separate GPU.

Wow, thanks for all the responses people. These are mega helpful as I was kind of assuming it might be mega difficult but it seems like its actually pretty doable.

These all look great, I suspect once all family members have chipped in his total funds will be closer to £300 than £400 but he has a little money of his own still saved up.

The AMD APU's seem like pretty decent bang for their buck for a Minecraft machine... although yeah I do wonder how long it will be before he moves onto other things. He does already have a Xbox 360 for other games though.

Well the time is nearly here, I will need to order this soon. Looks like he will end up with between £350-£400.

Was thinking this might be ok, unless someone points out something I have missed?

Edit: turns out I dont know how to post my basket like the others in the thread, will find out how and post it.

Looks good. Swap the PSU for this one though. Same price but better energy efficiency. The 5800K uses about 200 W max (at the wall) so 300 W is plenty.

wasn't sure what kind of power I needed so this is very useful to know, will swap it.

Windows in the killer here, while I would love to use Linux I think he would struggle with it as Windows is all he has ever used. Plus if things don't work I actually have an idea where to start with Windows :)

Just wanted to post to say that this is now built without issues and so far I have a very happy child as its running Minecraft great and even things like TF2.

I am actually impressed how good this little system is for the price.

Thanks for all the help people :)
