Is it possible to get a gaming rig with a monitor for £670?

Hello :) ,

I have £670 to spend on a PC build with a monitor. I would like to play future games close to max. FSX, TF2 etc. Future games - BF3 maybe?

Now I do own a TV but it is not full HD, it has a resolution of 1366by768. I realise this is a crap resolution for gaming so I don't know what to do. Is it really that bad playing games on a non full HDTV with a PC??

- I would like a PC build which is future proof.

- Is it better to get a PC build and leave the monitor for now? or

- Is it better to spend £670 on a lower spec PC build and monitor?

Thanks for any input. ;)

That is much better as far as component quality and 'future-proofing'. Can change motherboard to something else and whatnot. The case is quality, you can add a 3rd party cooler later (or now, but imo not necessary) for a 30% overclock, and the PSU can feed any high performance graphics card should you wish to upgrade in two years time.

I'd save £100 for a screen later and suffer a bit for a while. Using a computer with a TV is doable, even at 720p which is what laptops use. Better get a 1080p later though.

Hi,

Thanks for the help. :) Is not having a full HDTV going to affect my gaming a lot? Any other opinions on just getting a PC build and using it with a non 1080p TV for now? ;)

Hi,

Thanks for your help. :) What do you think about not getting a monitor that is HD for now and sticking for the resolution I have atm?

Yeah, if fsx it the main priority then I'd consider putting the money towards an i5 2500K and a NVIDIA card. Getting the i5 2500K will allow you to overclock the CPU (FSX runs smoother the higher the CPU clock).

You could get something like the following then save up for a nice 24" monitor seeing as you have your 720p HDTV at the moment rather than trying to squeeze a cheap 22" into your budget.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £173.99
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £161.99
1 x MSI P67A-C45 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £89.98
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Bundle - Home Premium 64 Bit £68.40
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) £29.99
1 x Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black £44.99
1 x OCZ StealthXStream 2 500W Power Supply £39.98
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £29.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £670.79 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Includes Windows. Add in an aftermarket cooler when your ready to overclock. (Personally I'd be tempted to buy this now, as it'll save you a bit of hassle later on). Overall the 2GB 6950 IMO is slightly better than the GTX560Ti (as it havs 2GB of VRAM) but for FSX the NVIDIA card will be better.

I don't need to buy a copy of windows, so what do you think of this:-

Use that 60 odd pounds to get an aftermarket cooler and upgrade to the 2GB 6950? :) Thanks for you help btw. :p I would like to play other games such as BF3 in the future hopefully too.

I would save the money towards better components, mainly power supply, case (although the Z9 ain't bad at all), and motherboard. After market coolers can wait imo. Again, if this is primarily FSX, I'd look up comparisons between a 560ti and a 6950 2GB in terms of performance. You may find that the 560 actually performs better. You may also find that overclocking a 2500K is beneficial and an after market cooler is the way to go :) I would change the PSU though, I don't like those OCZ too much, and you should able to afford something better suited.

As for gaming on lower res, you get better framerates, but image quality not so sharp obviously. It's mainly a desktop thing, higher resolution is better for browsing and watching 1080p videos.
