Is it possible to get smooth 24fps content when at 60Hz?

Hi all

When watching bluray content on my Samsung TV from my PC the panning shots judder quite a bit which is a common issue when watching 24fps video at 60Hz

Now normally when watching blurays from say my bluray player on the TV, modern TVs have a mode that reduces this effect by inserting frames inbetween to smooth it out.

When I watch the content on my PC the TV doesn't allow this to be enabled. Soooo my question is, is it possible to enable Media Player or Media Player Classic to do this work on the PC and give a smoother output?

Any tips? :)

the simple answer is No.

24 doesn't divide perfectly in to 60, so there's always going to be some frame repeat which is what causes the judder.

The answer is to run at a multiple of 24Hz. So 24, 48, 72 and so on. 72Hz is the most commonly chosen number for the refresh rate.

He's talking about motion interpolation mate. :) And I'm fairly certain your TV's signal processor will not support a 48Hz or 72Hz refresh rate :)

It is possible with a PC. Either by selecting 24Hz output in his GPU drivers and then enabling the mode in the TV's settings or by using specific software, such as Splash PRO.

Aye, but I'd prefer not to do that as I also like to play games on my TV from the PC and playing games at 24fps is rather horrible :)

Best way is to switch refresh rate over for game\video usage. XBMC can do this on its own in linux not sure about windows.

Yep you can in Windows. Just in the settings there is "match display refresh with video".

You could use some software like in the link to get the display to auto change to 24p when opening your video software.

That Splash Pro is bloody good. Just tried the demo and running with the 60fps mode it's really smooth, considerably smoother infact than running the video at the native 24hz.

My only gripe is on some scenes it seems to introduce some artifacts if you look closely, but then i suppose I can't have it all. Good recommend tho! :)

Some movies don't seem to play back smoothly when at 24p so I've taken to just leaving it at 60hz because I'm lazy and it doesn't make a huge difference anyway.

Splash Pro is a fantastic bit of software too, I use it almost exclusively now :)
