Evening all,

Quick question, is it possible for me to get Sky HD for my television service but keep my 20mb Virgin Media cable broadband? I realise that Sky needs a BT phone socket so could I just get broadband through Virgin Media and nothing else? Is there any extra charges for this sort of thing if it is possible?

Thanks. :)

It's perfectly possible to subscribe to Sky just for television and Virgin for cable broadband, we have both in our house.

Bear in mind you'll have to pay line rental to BT, and an installation fee if you don't already have a BT phone line.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Yep, I realise its going to cost me an arm and a leg to have the Virgin telephone line taken out and a BT one put in and then have Sky HD installed. :(

At least I know I can do it now though, I seem to be one of the lucky few who live in a decent cable area in terms of performance and I really wouldnt want to surrender my 20mb cable for ADSL considering I live about 3.5km away from my BT exchange!

I use Virgin Media 4MB and phone. And also use Sky Digital. I've never heard before that you had to use a BT phone line before. Never had any problems with Sky either.

Oh right, I was 99% certain that one of the requirements of Sky was a BT phoneline?

Hmmm... just check the Sky website and it does say you need a BT phone line.

Not sure what's going on with ours then.

Edit: Think it just suggests a BT line, because they wouldn't really want to tell you to call Virgin Media. Because in the FAQ it just says...

To enjoy Sky TV, you need three things:

A television!
A working telephone line.
A suitably aligned satellite dish

my friend has cable for the net/phone & skyhd & he plugs his telephone cable into the telephone socket as you would do with BT.

Same here, you do not need a BT line.

I can confirm this also, running normal Sky downstairs through Virgin telephone line.

They said we needed one when we had it first installed, but with a bit of pressure they decided to fit it with the Virgin line.

You need a phoneline connected to the box (any - we have it with Virgin telephone) for the first 12 months of a new contract with Sky.

same here have sky + and my telephone is with virgin ,would only think you would need a bt line if you wanted there broadband as well but as your going with virgin dont see that its a problem :)

How do so many ex-pats in mainland Europe (myself included) get away with it then? The only time I'ver ever heard of anyone having a problem is when they called customer service from abroad.

Having the phone line connected you mean? Well you don't 'need' it, but it is in the contract, so they can track viewing stats etc.
