I don't fully understand what you're asking, but you can get rounded IDE cables now. I'd strongly recommend those over the ribbon type pictured. They're easier to route and don't impact airflow as much.

Try levering of the back of the connector with a small flat blade screw driver, sliding it along the cable, and reclamping the two half's together.

i really doubt it. there will be wire ends connected to the plastic bit of the IDE cable, so you cant move the middle one, no matter how much it looks like you might be able to

Yes, you should be able to move it. These connectors are self crimping. There are no wire ends or otherwise. It is known as an IDC. Be careful on removal, itis easy to snap the clips. They have sharp triangular terminals inside deigned to cut through the insulation and into the wire. Much like telephone and network sockets.

IDC connectors such as these aren't really designed to be uncoupled and repositioned but providing you can actually take it apart without breaking it you may find it possible to relocate it. You will need to carefully line the ribbon up and push down a section at a time until it's all done, ensuring you don't cross any circuits. You might want to use z multimeter once you are find to verify the circuits are good. I'm not sure what'll happen if you get it wrong and present it to your interface.

I've done it in the past but you do need to be very careful taking them apart as the clips will snap without giving much notice.

Like others have said for what they cost this could be a ideal time to move to rounded cables.

A mate of mine back in the day used to make IDE cables for me, make sure you get it dead on straight if you move them.

But really, for the bother, as has been said, go sata!
