...X-fire a 7950 with a 7970?
I heard that you could but interested whether this would bring with it any issues or limitations?

Additionally, when X-firing will it make any difference if I choose GPUs from different manufacturers? I have a Sapphire 7950 - can I X-fire with an MSI, Gigabyte, etc.?

Cheers

Would the performance be limited by the least powerful card then?
I presumed - with my distinct lack of knowledge - that the performance of a 7970 and a 7950 would exceed 2 x 7950. Is that not the case?

Sure....
Why not to check, before saying such rubbish ?

Maybe you should understand what is being said before being a total douche?

They can run at different clock speeds, where did I contest this fact? (answer, nowhere)

You are still locked into the performance of the lesser card, irrespective of clock speed. He already has a 7950, he should get another 7950 for Xfire, not a 7970. End of.

Not strictly true, depending on the mode Xfire is running it can run with load balancing (CrossfireX mode - scissors & supertiling) so the faster card renders more of the screen.

Personally I wouldn't do it, but there should be some increase in performance when run in these modes, but I'm not sure how effective it would be with a HD 7950/7970 combo.

You seem to be suggesting that by adding a 7970, you'll still only receive the performance of 2 x 7950 when in crossfire??

OP, Performance from best to least would be 7970/7970 then 7970/7950 then 7950/7950.

I'd also go with an 7950 unless your getting a great deal on a 7970.
