Hello folks,

I've asked before about replacement suggestions and just wondering if anyone had any advice on what cars to look at.

Requirements are fairly simple (i'll keep my thoughts to myself at the mo to see what people suggest), but requirements with a (*) are musts:

- Quickish (~8 to 60)
- Reliable (*)
- Handles well (Currently in a MK4 Golf barge)
- Big enough for a labrador in the boot (hatch's are fine, he fits in the Golf with loads of room to spare) (*)
- Petrol
- Manual
- >30mpg, <200 tax p/a

Budget: ~4-5k, preferably cheaper, could go more at a push

Any suggestions please chaps?

<200p/a VED is a spoof requirement as over the course of the year VED impacts your overall running costs minimally, especially when saying you'll spend £5k on the car but won't budge to £2xx for VED.

Renaultsport Clio (although potentially 'unreliable')
Mk5 Golf GTI (although 'golf barge' as you call it)

It's about 11 inches shorter and about 5-10 inches narrower than a mk4 Mondeo so it's not really that big a car at all. It's based on the same platform as the Golf, don't forget.

I don't think a dog will like being stuffed inside a boot or its head banged on a windscreen everytime it goes over potholes!

Maybe - Tax was just a figure I picked out of the sky as I don't want to be paying ~£500 a year, i usually pay in a lump sum so I dont have to worry about it.

A civic 1.8 2006 on will do 0-60 within 8 secs, has a huge boot with flat folding rear seats, 180 a year to tax and high 30's mpg

Cheers, will take a look

Why must the car be sub 8s?

I would get a Focus

Because I asked for it? Daily drive is 30ish miles of A&B roads with many twisties and decent overtaking opportunities - I know 0-60 isn't the best figure, but it's the only indication most searches give for 'spritely-ness'

Any Clio 200 owners on here? Wondered whether the boot on those would be big enough for a doge... They look pretty sizeable on the pictures.

Clio boot is a decent size for a small hatch, would I concider it a good enough size to fit a dog? Not really. (Don't own one, but have used for a few days)

MK4 Golf has 320 litre boot space, Clio is apparently 288 - tbh, there's loads of room for him in the golf (easily twice as much as needed). He's only 25kg :)
