ok i have connected them the vista machine says it has local only which im sure is fine but the xp machine says it has limited connectivity i turned the firewall of any reason why it still wont let me access the vista shares?
just using a normal ethernet cable that you can plug into your router but that should not matter should it i have no problem when using this cable for xp-xp
Have you manually assigned the machines IP addresses, subnet masks et al?
They won't do it automatically unless you're running a DHCP server somewhere, hence the limited connectivity messages.
