Is it safe to let my CPU get fairly hot for extended periods of time on a regular basis?

I used £15,000 of electricity in a 3 year period, if you are not paying the bill be prepared to get reamed out when who ever is notices.
Really? £15,000 not £1500? ;) If so I won't feel quite so bad paying my £40 bill at the end of the month instead of the ~£400/month bill you were paying.

£15k would be an average of about 4 KW every moment of the day. It's doable with maybe 8 GPU machines crunching away.

Yes 4 units an hour.
I had a lot of PC's running 24/7

More recently i was using GPU's and they are power hungry.
Pairs of 8800's in each PC, then 260's and on to Keplers mostly 470's

I did get a visit from the constabulery to check if i was growing weed.
Because of the heat in the house i moved some of the PC's outside to the garden shed.
This showed up on the thermal camera.

Haha brilliant, bet they got a surprise when you showed them the truth and I'm sure they were slightly perplexed as to the whole setup.

You only really have to worry about lifetime degredation over 80C (even with more recent advancements in the material tech). Even then you should get around 5 years and quite possibly more before it died or showed signs of instability. However going upto 90C would be a big decrease in lifetime again.
