Used Akasa TIM Cleaner most recently with some kitchen roll (after wiping off excess first) but before that it was vodka

If I haven't got the wipe from the kit then I just use tissue or kitchen roll off not a dry cloth and just rub it off, I used a screw driver to get very dried up paste of a heat sink the other and while I left scratches it didn't effect the use, it was an old one so it wouldn't have mattered, but either way I have not had any issues with my methods.

Isopropyl alcohol's pretty cheap. Just spray some onto a cloth and rub that gunk off your component.
