I've got a new case coming this morning and when moving the components, I intend to give the dusty components a good hover, same applies to the old case.

Is this a safe method of de-dusting??!

To be honest, it would only be the fans getting a good hoovering, CPU, GPU & Case Fans, this should be ok right?

Short answer, no.

Long answer, hoovers create static electricity which could potentially fry the components you are hoovering, its unlikely but possible and not worth the risk.

You can pick up compressed air for a few quid a can.

*edit* Hoovering fans is fine, personally I would just blow the dust away from components rather than hoover.

It's not really safe to hoover electrical components, no. Hoovering the fans should be fine but I wouldn't advise going all gung ho on the rest. There's not only the risk of static damage but also the risk of direct damage because you're a badly coordinated ape.

Thanks for that!! Your clearly not one with words :D

Your PC case is essentially a hover, the only difference is the case is metal and plugged in to the ground. In reality though it's safe to hover home PC stuff, you've got things made to handle by home users it's not a quantum computer, I've been hovering PCs for decades and yet to have anything fail as a result. If you're even remotely worried just have the compnants resting on a plugged in metal case so the board is earthed at all times.

In the past, I've just done it with the machine off and not dismantled it. It's not till I changes a case that I even thought of the potential impact.

It's never failed me yet!

Use compressed air, its cheap as chips and good fun too! you'll end up wasting half the can spraying people in the face with it!

But somehow, you still need to collect the dust that is being removed, otherwise it just ends up back in your case.

Desires already said it, your case is a hoover!

Another alternative I use is to buy an airbed inflator from a camping or outdoor pursuits store. I got mine for about £20, so about the same cost as two cans of compressed air. Won't run out or freeze your hands like a can will, and the airflow will be gentle on components but still get rid of dust.

I've hoovered my computer, although not on maximum suck (lol), a few times and all is still well.
