Is it still worth overclocking?

hey guys,

I know..i know..i keep on about my 1060 GPU. BUT..is it worth overclocking it further?

first off I was peakign out at 78c (i know thats within limits) but was a bit high for my liking

so with a tweaked fan curve on MSI Afterburner..i done a sesh of DOOM here for around 25-35 minutes..averaging 130ish on 1080p unltra and i think it dipped ONCE to 85ish..and the temps i checked soon as i quit and it peaked at 61c..and the cpu (as i have the reference blower) was at 51c in my smallish case (nzxt 340) which i love btw..

so my question, is there any point in OCing with what im getting so far in games? i only ask as i now have headroom for it with the custom fan curve bringing it down by 17c !!

No reason to unless you're benchmarking for extra points.

You might squeeze a few fps out of Doom but you will not notice them ( visually).

Doom cannot be very demanding if you are getting 130fps at 1080p ultra.

Just because 1 game is stable/heatwise doesn't mean your overclock is, if you really want to max it out stress test it with something that you can compare.

I tried overclocking my 970 but kept running into the stupid power limits. Even custom bios didn't fix it completely.

With lower end modern Nvidia cards gains seem to be marginal (unless I'm doing it wrong)

If your getting good performance at stock then I wouldn't bother.

Ya dont have to overclock for the sake of it, overclock to reach the best possible settings in games but if your already maxing out the games you play then dont overclock. I have 3 overclock profiles on AB that are hot keyed to my keyboard and i switch between them as needed, for old games i lock the cards to about 600 mhz for newer less demanding games i have a 1100 mhz profile with an undervolt then for the intensive games i have a 1500 mhz overclock. I've done the same thing through my last 3 sets of GPUs and it saves a lot of power and will extend the life of the cards.

so you went with an intel CPU? what motherboard did you end out getting?

so did you go for the 6gb 1060? Im tempted to get one to replace my 970 but would like to see a good comparison between them both.

yeah, i got a steal on a 4670K new, and the motherboard was a popular one (Gigabyte Z97P-D3).

and yeah mate, it was the 6gb version (ocuk value - manli) and it is awesome. so far anyways... :)

nice one mate.

I noticed a great difference when I went to the i5 4690k from the 8350 even using the same GPU at the time. I must admit it makes me ask why I bothered upgrading my AMD system to the 8350 in the first place.

after getting the i7 4770k Ive noticed a nice wee increase again.

Ive been thinking about getting a 1060 to replace my 970

if you do decide to overclock don't use the gigabyte software do it in the bios as when I tried using the software that came with my gigabyte board the CPU ran hot compared to overclocking it in the bios.

I must admit I find the MSI board an easier board to overclock the CPU on

yeah, since changing to the intel CPU it has been a 10 fold improvement, and it now compliments my 1060 nicely..

like i said, with my adjusted custom fan curve my temps peeked at 60c-61c so i am real happy. i use a headset so the noise ramping up doesnt affect me and then spools back down when the gaming has finished!
