sorry they are both my shopping lists i forget to say that the bottom 1 was my first list b4 i though about i7 sorry my bad. no my system isnt that slow but im going to hv to upgrade motherboard, ram and graphics card so thought it might save me so cash in the long run and i will be buying this b4 the end of this month

Have you overclocked the Q6600 at all? You haven't specced a cooler in your list - so I'm guessing you haven't OC'd the Q6600 either. It might be better to buy a decent cooler and give it a reasonable overclock, and buy a couple of gigs more RAM.

Then, if you're seriously into rendering, wait for i9 next year sometime and upgrade then, as they'll be 6 core CPUs. The i9's will run on the same socket as the current i7s so you could still go down the i7 route and just upgrade the CPU to an i9 later.

Really depends on your budget, but for rendering I'd tend to be looking at i7 and/or i9 and not i5.

yeah i just got a stock cooler with it and i did attempt to overclock it to 2.8 but was unstable and i think it was due to the motherboard and its the only time of the year were im able to upgrade my system and i have about 700 quid to use.
i was just thinking if im gonna move to the i7 series i might as well move now then later to future proof my self for another and save some cash next year

Well if it's your last chance to upgrade til next year (and you can't save the cash) - I'd be tempted to go i7 with a view to i9 maybe this time next year.

But if you're going for a 920 it's the same clock speed as your Q6600 - so you'll see an improvement but it won't be that significant. How about getting a decent cooler and OC'ing the 920 at least to 950 speeds.

yeah i was gonna but to about 3ghz i dont wanna push my processor too far and how far are they pushing overclocks with them and i think the i7 will be around for a few years

yeah im gonna go with an aftermarket cooler but i dont wanna push it too far i dont wanna kill my processor but i might try to 3.5 i just wanna a system thats fast and future proof
