Is it time to upgrade?

Hi guys,

I've had my current rig for a while now and am wondering what peoples thoughts were on whether I'd see a decent performance improvement by upgrading now. The specs are:

i5 4690 (non K)
16gb 2400 RAM
Crucial SSD
EVGA 1070
Corsair 200R case

My thought was to upgrade the processor as I feel it's holding the 1070 back and there's certainly no point in upgrading the GPU at this point. I don't have a windowed case and was therefore looking at:

i5 8600k (£313.97) + Cooler Master 212 Evo (£25.26)
MSI Z370-A PRO ATX M/B (£89.98)
16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4- 3000 (£138.99)

The computer is mainly used for gaming and some video editing (converting videos to x264/5.

I'd be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on the best way to spend £500-£600 on upgrades?

Thanks!

Check posts above, bench marks ryzen Vs intel with tomb raider. Intel will always have the edge, specially at 1080p , bit not ground breaking as it use to be

I game at 1440p on a 34" ultrawide hence wanting to upgrade, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the first title that's made me think my system is showing it's age a little!

So how about:
Ryzen 7 1700x (£194.34)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 (£25.26)
MSI B450 Tomahawk (£97.97)
Corsair Vengeance 16gb DDR4 3000 (£138.99)

Total = £456.56

Ah 34**X 1440p pixels... Be looking at 1080ti running that bad boy!!! If ultra wide sorry

Extra threads will help , and ryzen makes it cheap for upgrading and then lasting a good while .

Core upgrade will be more beneficial in the long run but GPU upgrade would instantly push the FPS higher but you'll evenuevent reach need for extra threads

My 1070 has been just fine since I got the ultrawide but SotTR is the first title to give me problem hence why I thought about upgrading the CPU rather than dropping another £500+ ona GPU and still be held back.

True ,1700x is a good shout. Specially when Zen2 refresh should bold nicely in 2020 .
Get a better cooler though . Not as hot as intel but 4ghz across all cores hits 70c under water / 240aio

if you really want intel

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £669.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

would allow 9th gen upgrade in future , and z390 feature 12 VRM set up compared to 4-8 on z370 entry and midrange

would personally go AMD
