Is it true with NVIDIA GTX 400 Series Cards, SPDIF passthrough no needed for audio through HDMI?

Hi

I`m planning on buying a HDMI cable to connect my computer in my sig to my Panasonic TX-P50VT20B 50-inch 3D Plasma TV and since
I have a Zotac GeForce GTX 480 AMP Graphics Card, I was wondering if it's definitely true that with the NVIDIA GTX 400 Series
of Cards you no longer need SPDIF passthrough to your Motherboard or Sound Card for audio through HDMI and all is needed is to
connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the back of the GeForce GTX 480 and then to the TVs HDMI port and then select
NVIDIA HDMI Audio as default in Windows 7 Sound -> Playback Devices?

thats correct,this is the way i have mine setup

Yep, the sound even comes through a dvi to hdmi cable. (which surprised me)

One other question.

If I connect my GeForce GTX 480 to my Onkyo TX-SR608 HD AMP by HDMI, will I get 5.1 HD sound or just normal 5.1 digital surround?

Gf100 based cards cannot do lossless compressed audio formats such as DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

Yep, only the 460 and 450 can do the HD sound codecs.

It's a pity about no HD audio supported.

I should at least get 5.1 digital surround and DTS 5.1, correct?

Yes thats what you should get. This is one of the reasons i didn't even considder a 470/480 this round, didn't want to sacrifice my hd audio
