Is it worth buying a Sound card if I have a motherboard with one built in?

if you are using high end audio equipment then a sound card can be worth getting as they can produce better quality sound than the on board audio chips. almost all modern day on board sound chips can output surround sound.

I'd say yes,my sound on asrock z77 extreme 4 is bad,and live without my sound card(which I ****ed up is not the same)
Are you looking for gaming card or music one?
What is your budget?

you have to remember if you are using very cheap speakers, a soundcard is not likely going to help with sound quality, so without knowing what speakers you use, it will be hard to give a definate answer

I have had no problems and to be honest I use my headset more, the speakers are just some logitech 50 pound ones, was just curious as to what the purpose of having a sound card was.
Wasnt looking at upgrading speakers. yet ;)

Thank you

A dedicated device is in 99% of cases always better than an all in one solution.

The same goes for sound cards. But at the end of the day it depends on everything else your using. the quality of the media being played, the speakers/headphones, etc they all should reflect similar quality.

No point in playing FLAC through a £5 speaker the same as no point playing a low bit rate file through £10,000 speakers.

Everything within the setup should be relative so if you have decent speakers/headphones then getting a decent sound card would be advisable. But don't spend £100 on a sound card if your headphones/speakers aren't at least mid end.

I have a Asus hero motherboard and although I'm having problems getting the mic to function at the moment even with my cheap stereo headphones there is a noticeable improvement with the xonar sound card I installed which is only thirty pounds, so I would recommend a sound card over using on board audio
