Is it worth buying mote memory for my laptop?

Currently got about a 3 year old Toshiba Tecra S1.

1.4GHz, 40 Gb Hdd. 256Mb ram.

It is as slow as a snail! The Hdd is constantly clacking away even when opening and closing non memory hungry applications.

I've just done a fresh install and it's still as bad.

So is it worth my while upgrading to an extra 1Gb? If I did and spent the £60-70 what I see a worthwhile performance increase?

When running windows XP even an increase to 512mb will see a big improvement, boot times on my mates laptop dropped by 1 min with 512mb. It was a cheap laptop with a celeron processor and lots of apps running on startup.

How much faster 1GB will be over 512mb, does depend on what your running, but you will always need a min of 512mb with XP once you have antivirus software installed.

Upgrade to 1GB, if that HD is 4200rpm I would also upgrade to larger 5400rpm whilst you're at it.
