Is it worth getting a PS3 yet?

It's my brother's birthday coming up mid June, and he wants a PS3. The thing is, I'm wondering if it is actually worth getting one atm? There don't appear to be any decent games out, and the chances are the prices will drop dramatically sometime in the near future.

At the moment, for gaming, the PS3 is seriously lacking compared to the Xbox 360, but considering how long both machines have been out, this is to be expected. If you think he'd appreciate watching films on the console, then the PS3, with its built in Blu Ray drive, is a good choice.

If he doesn't already have a 360 then I think the PS3 is a worthwhile purchase - it has about a dozen good quality games available, it just so happens that about 90% of them are also available on the 360. But then, if he doesn't have or want a 360 that isn't going to matter.
I guess you/your brother need to look at what games are available right now, decide if they can keep you going until the AAA titles start coming out, and whether the price of the console is worth what you expect to get out of it.

you might aswell get one, in the long run i beleive it will be better, resistance and motorstorm plus a few other decent games should keep him occupied for a while.

Coincidentally his birthday is straight after his GCSEs have finished, and with the summer holidays around the corner, he will probably want quite a few decent games. We'll have a look at what's available. I take it there are plenty of decent multiplayer games out?

I don't think there is many big games to appear over the summer. A lot of them are slated for Sep-Nov 07. If you really need one for summer I would get a 360 or get a PS3 and mix and match some ps2 and ps3 games if he really wants one. I assume your bro isn't into movies. If he likes movies then it is a no brainer and the ps3 wins it by a long shot.

From memory and there only release dates so not confirmed as such but for UK release June/July for PS3 (some are multi format i know) are Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, The Darkness, Rainbow 6 vegas, Everybodys Golf 5, Singstar and some others i cant remember. Dont forget the PS3 is region free so the US games that are released before the Uk will work and are cheaper than they are here.

I was debating on weather to get an Xbox 360 or PS3 some months ago. I chose the 360 route due to PS3 only being out a short period of time and lack of titles at launch. Happy with my decision but will definately purchasing one once some decent titles come out for it.

Don't know what to advice you but if he says he wants a PS3 then get him a PS3. At the end of the day, he's hoping for a PS3. not a PS2 or xbox or Xbox360 or Wii. Or unless he doesn't know what is he looking for.

No good games out until at least April 2008. (MGS4, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy)

You mean established exclusives?

Some exclusive games that could be big out before then: Warhawk, Uncharted, LittleBigPlannet, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Tekken 6.

If you get him a PS3 import it.
Region free so it doesn't matter and sony insists on stripping the features down and charging the UK market MORE.

Though tbh I'm wishing i'd never bought a PS3 now, I only really bought it as a blu ray player.
The 360 is a far superior console, sony have gone too far up their own arse, I used to be a sony fanboy, now I have a serious dislike for sony since they bought the PS3 out.

Buying a £400 console and voiding the warranty, not brilliant advice really unless you understand the drawbacks.

The PS3 is slowly dropping its price, we are doing the PS3 and DVD remote for £399 now, compared to the console which was £425 alone 2 month ago. I wouldnt expect huge drops in price, but beter deals will certainly start to appear.

I suggested that, but he really doesn't like them.

I might get a 360 purely for Test Drive :D
I would say that if he doesn't like Xbox then he hasn't played any of the multi platform games out on both yet, so there's plenty to keep him entertained on the PS3. I would go for it if it's what he wants.
