Is it worth getting an expensive mouse?

Probably in a river somewhere
Now I've always been one of those people with a "if it ain't broke dont fix it" mentallity, but I've got a bit of money from relatives for christmas and I'm toying with the idea of getting a new mouse, to replace the old ball one I've been using for about 8 years now.

I like the look of the Logitech G9 because I think it looks cool and would suit my fairly wide hands.

The problem is the tight voice inside my head is saying I don't need to spend that much on a mouse when I've got one that works fine. I enjoy a good bit of TF2 in the evenings, but I'm not exactly a 1337 gamer dude. Do these fancy rodents really make a difference?

PK!

a higher DPI does make a difference :)

but i wouldn't spend more than 25 quid on a mouse if you werent play frequently.

put it like this... a ps3 owner will spend £25 on a new controller :D

I'd never spent more than £10 on a mouse before I bought my G7. Had several sleepless nights in the days before it arrived trying to convince myself that £50+ on a mouse would be worth it.... it was :D

Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 this really is a great mouse I highley recommend I chose it over my old trusty logitech MX518 which had DPI control but the MS mouse is a lot more comfortable :).

You spend x hours a day holding it. Work out, over its lifetime, how much it's going to cost you per hour - it's nothing at all.

If you are not a `leet gamer` dude, I wouldnt bother spending any amount of money on another mouse. Maybe a few quid to get a cheap one that is going to be better than a ball mouse.

If you are a `leet gamer` dude, even then, DPI is not the end all and be all of being good at an FPS.

My personal opinion for keyboards and mice is fairly simple.

Get a good one that is comfortable and suits your needs.
If you don't need a stonking great DPI and 15 buttons on a mouse don't get it, but do make sure you get a decent mouse for what you're doing, and most importantly get a mouse the is comfortable - there is no point in trying to use a mouse that is too small, or too big for you (both situations can result in pain/problems).

i have an mx revoloution, its so good i cant stand wires they drive me up the wall, i have looked at the new mx air but its not a patch on the revoloution

if you like wires there is a lot of cheaper good mice and i would reccomend going somewhere you can feel the mouse ect

I rember having exactly the same reservations just before i bought my Habu. In the past i'd always just used cheap optical mice and ball mice and got by. But having now bought my Habu nothing else compares, you won't go back to "normal" mice afterwards. Things like being able to flick through DPI on the fly i just can't live without anymore (I exagerate).

Try and have a go with the mouse before you buy it as there is so much variation in design and feel. What suits one person might not suit you, it's really subjective.

Do you really need one? I still kick myself for buying a razor for about £50. I hoped it would make me a master killer, pinpoint accurate headshots etc.
Utterly pointless waste of money, I still sucked :(

Thanks for the advice guys. It sounds like I'm going to have to find somewhere nearby where I can feel up some mice without getting hassle from the RSPCA.

PK!

I recently went from a standard cheap mouse to a razer copperhead and it definately make a difference (and not just in games). You don't have to move you hand miles to get from one side of the screen to the other and it's more responsive and comfortable. Also if you don't have a mouse with side buttons get one - just being able to go back and forth when internet browsing is worth it.

that and the keyboard are the part you touch. Its the interface between you and your computer. Imagine a Ferrari with a 1980's fiesta interior... A decent mouse is a good investment. I bought my G5 a while back, I absolutely love it. Only problem is is making my MS keyboard jealous...

All the posts so far seem to be geared towards gamers. What if you dont game, but want a super reliable/accurate mouse in the desktop? Is it worth getting say the Razer Deathadder?

I currently have a Microsoft Platinum Intellimouse and its left mouse button is misfiring, so I'm looking for a replacement.

Also, I find that the MS mouse has problems working on the current surface. Would a Razer Deathadder help in this area? I dont particularly want to resort to getting a mouse matt.

you need a good mouse for fps games. well you dont NEED it but it makes your game better. a usb interface is also what you want. anything is better than a ball mouse. be it led or lazer. lazer is the better though. you also have the benefit of side buttons for key assignment which can speed your actions/reactions up a lot if you use them correctly.

i have an mx1000 and it has an issue when used in usb every now and then the mouse will shoot to the bottom of the screen so in an fps i would sudenly be looking at the floor. its killed me countless times while playing CS:S be it nading myself or getting me killed by another player before i could kill him. i dont have this issue in ps/2 but my server ranking climes much higher with it in usb even with this error. so usb MUST be helping my game if i could fix that damn error id be even better still :p

Started with standard 'cabled' mouse later moved to optical ,then wireless all o'k (best move was to optical - no cleaning etc)
Recently decided to go back to cabled (got sick of changing batteries) and decided to upgrade not only mouse but mousemat (getting old & more worried about RSA) -
Ended up going for a laser mouse (product not stocked here) and

Would have no hesitation in recomending this type of combo - a pleasure to use, no aches or pains and with right mouse adabtable (DPI as You wish)to exactly what you want:)
IMO One of those upgrades that once you do you wonder why you didn't do before - you use the mouse all the time so best if comfortable etc

The best combo possible

MS 3.0 and Icemat and its cheap dont bother buying all these stupidly high DPI things, not really needed!
