Is it worth getting GTA 4?

Single player was OK, nothing fantastic. The last GTA I played was III and it isn't much different in terms of gameplay and a lot of the extra stuff (girlfriends/minigames) didn't hold my attention for long.

Multiplayer was quite bad. Last time I played there were about 30 servers and 100 players. MP games were giving me lower fps than single player, it lags and the collision is buggy in racing games. It feels like a really bad console port, both in the way the multiplayer is set up and in performance.

My Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz and GTX 260 eats up GTA IV at 1920x1200, though most of the "quality" sliders are at around 50%.

It's the best GTA game by quite a way I reckon, and unlike everyone else I have had zero problems with it from day one!

What I find very interesting about it is that all of its post processing effects appear to have been coded in house and designed to run on the CPU more than the GPU. This of course has led to issues with ppl with dual core cpus slower than the three 3.2Ghz cores of the XBOX. It's easy to forget that the 360 (and the PS3 in all honesty) are actually genuinely little powerhouses in some respects. Shame they dont have enough RAM / good GPUs :)

Either way, if you havent played it, i'd get it anyway, you may need to drop down from your desired res with that rig, but it'll look good enough I reckon. It's a very good game, the characters are great and well acted and generally speaking it keeps you engaged.

Same here, guess we were lucky!!.

I recall reading through the long GTA:IV thread on here and seeing folk with better systems than myself posting that they were having massive issues running the game and I just thought - "Eh?". :p

It really needs a quad core it seems.

Your more or less correct, a Dual Core overclocked close to 4Ghz actually runs the game pretty well, quads of 3Ghz+ will be fine.

A few weeks back I ran some fairly detailed tests of GTAIV with [email protected] versus [email protected], the results were posted within forums CPU section for someone who was asking about GTAIV + quads etc. Tbh they would be more help to most forum users if posted in main GTAIV thread, instead of some random CPU thread, so I'll dig them up later.

GTA 4 is a good game, one of the best in the GTA series. However the PC port is absolutely dog-**** bad.

If you want a better sandbox style game, I would recommend Saints Row 2. Mmmmmm!

Thats a laugh! the PC version of SR2 runs like a 2 legged cat and stutters more than Norman Collier!

GTA IV butched my [email protected] and 280 Gtx OC Edition .....Stuttering endlessly

The best solution is to get the cheapest system so at least when you get stutter you wont fell bad because you only spent very little on the system rather than thousands and gets stutters ***

It's a bloody awful game. Bought it, did 9% then got completely bored. I occasionally go back to it but it just can't hold my interest. It's just too slow and dark compared to the others and just isn't fun to play.

If you do get it, grab it on xbox/ps3.

Some of you lot are just ridiculously hard to please, it's an amazing game and I bought it for the 360 then later on the PC.:)
Runs good for me, not amazing but I have it all on highest at 1920x1080. You only really notice it murdering your PC when its night and it starts raining!

Just play GTA:SA, online play on that can be awesome!

True, played that for ages at one time.. not so much anymore

To be honest both of them can be fun BUT can is a big word, there are cheaters in GTA IV and san andreas MP.. though it has serious laggy issues even with low ping, GTA IV is not laggy online though.

kind of stupid rockstar would not even put in anticheat for an officially made multiplayer! and i didnt play it for that long and came across cheaters.

GTA IV is a cool game and runs pretty fine now imo with patch 3.
I played it first on low settings with my Dell Vostro laptop, 2.1ghz CD2 and 8400m gs; getting 28-55 FPS.
With the rig in my sig I can play all high, apart from shadows and view distance; 35-75 FPS.
Before I got my GTX 285, with a HD 4850 I ran it all high apart from Medium textures; 28-64 FPS.
One of the best current single player game experieces I reckon.

What's your PC, 4.0Ghz Core i7?

I installed GTAIV to test run a E2200 (@ 3Ghz), 4GB PC8500 & 3850 512mb, was borderline unplayable at 1280x1024, even with 3rd patch...

Couldn't play it on my Q6600, 4GB and 8800GTX. I had the same framerate of about 27-30FPS on whatever resolution and settings I put it to, it was unplayable. I installed it yesterday with the latest patches and it's still the same

However if you can get it to work, it's brilliant.

GTA is a great game. I find it quite nice just driving around. Runs really nice on my system.

The latest patch helps, and you may need to play around with the settings, but before I got my Q6700 I had an E6600 and it ran well (30fps mostly)
