Is it worth going from a release PS4 to the Pro??

I'm considering going to the Pro from the standard release PS4 and wondered what other people's opinions were on the move?

I've got a 55" 4K TV (Sony XE9005) so would obviously benefit from the 4K jump in resolution but I read somewhere that the standard PS4 already supports HDR so no change there??

Has anyone else made this change and loved/regretted it?

I did...

I would say its worth it, most games coming out are Pro/X enhanced and many are being patched and then there is boost mode...

Don't expect any improvements in noise though, the Pro is louder than any console I have ever owned by some distance.

I have mine in the exact same stand as my Xbox One X and the X is silent, Sony really have to sort this out with the PS4 Pro slim or PS5 whatever comes next.

I did as well and I don't even have a 4k TV.

I'm pretty happy because the white one looks great and many games do benefit from the additional power, e.g. Yakuza 6 performs very poorly on the base model and BF1 looks somewhat blurry, whereas such issues aren't the case on the Pro. SoC is rumored to run at 60fps@1080p on the Pro.

I did it solely for the performance improvement as I believe more and more new games will struggle on the base model.

It's not a must-upgrade sort of thing, but the benefits are there.

Regarding noise, it's luck of the draw to some extent. Mine can get pretty audible (briefly) in certain scenarios but it stays quiet enough most of the time that I don't really notice it.

EDIT: Yes, base PS4 supports HDR, it was added via system update

Mines pretty quiet, much quieter than my base PS4 was.

Worth the jump? If you have the display I’d say so, Sell your base PS4 to help fund the upgrade.

My Pro is quieter than my previous base model.

In terms of whether or not it's worth the upgrade, I think it comes down to how much you play and really whether the extra outlay is considerable to your life. If you're the sort of person that would notice either increased resolution or framerate then, yes, definitely upgrade.

I find noise is dependent on temperature, in the summer I found my pro was running pretty loud and at the moment it's almost silent

The Pro is definitely louder than the PS4 Slim I had before, but then that was a very quiet console. I don't see noise as a massive problem, the only time I can even hear the fans is if I'm playing a game late at night and have the sound turned down. For me it was worth the upgrade from the standard PS4 to the Pro. Some games look noticeably better, others it's a bit more subtle. For example, AC Origins was night and day, whereas CoD WWII doesn't change much. I think the Pro will come into its own next year with the release of RDR2, Death Stranding, God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone and Detroit Become Human. I'd certainly want to experience those games on a 4k console.

Yes. Mine is a tad noisier.Biggest difference? If you like shooters, draw distance, loading times, prettier graphics. Overall its much snappier. You would basically be future proofing, more and more focus will shift to the pro next year, the standard ps4 will suffer similar to the XB1 standard has/will

Draw distance increase is excellent. In many games you have a clear advantage, which I don't think is widely known. Ark goes from 720p on the standard, to 1080p on the pro, now that was night and day difference.

Pro can be noisy when running the enhanced titles but it's not too bad. Assassin's Creed Origins seems to be the loudest so far. Origins on Pro convinced me to wait for an inevitable price drop on One X.

I had a release PS4 and that was a lot louder - I even took it apart to clear out some of the dust.

I've got a 4k TV so the upgrade was definitely worth it. If stuck with 1080p I'd be more reticent.

Totally not worth it.

I did it because my launch PS4 was so loud. Whilst there was some improvement in noise levels, the Pro is nowhere near quiet and the marginal improvements in frame rate and upscaling to 4k aren't worth the £100 premium over the base PS4. If I was buying again I'd just get a Slim tbh.

...and yes I have a 4k TV.

IMO it's not worth going from a PS4 to a pro because what you get for your current ps4 is pennies. You would need to have a 4K screen for sure and play a lot for it to be worthwhile as well as it not being a lot of money to you.

If you don't own either then it has to be a ps4 pro for longevity and better resale value.

personally i'll wait for the next upgrade. ps4 pro slim or ps4 pro extra (with even more power to match the xbox one x or beat it).

I have actually done the upgrade. As I said before - my Pro is quieter than my launch PS4. I have a 4k HDR tv and trust me the switch is defo worth it. Games that properly support the Pro are sublime (GT Sport, Horizon etc) and this can only get better as devs take better advantage of hardware etc. If you're gonna make the jump - do it now is my advice.

Imo it’s either do it now and enjoy the system for a couple of years, or wait till next E3 when the rumours of PS5 will be floating about and you will feel you need to wait.

I got my pro with two games for £299, they sold for £75 straight away and my base PS4 sold for £100 (for a quick sale)

So it cost me £124 to upgrade, worth it in my opinion.. but only you can really decide if that’s money well spent in your day to day budget.

Yes, if you have the cash spare. I still think £300 is too much then I look at the overpriced elephant in the room, the Xbox One X, £450, what a joke.

I did and feel it's worth it so if you have a 4K jump on board.

Saying that I also went for the Xbox One X and that's not what most would consider value for money on an upgrade basis.

I enjoy refreshing my hardware, if you have the money spare and you want to then just do it.

I have the same TV as you and just upgraded from the launch PS4 to the Pro. I moved the old PS4 to my home office as I needed a spare PS4 for when the wife and I want to watch TV and the kids want to play. Getting the Pro seemed a no brainier and as mentioned earlier in the thread games that support it really do look fantastic. I’d buy another Pro in a heartbeat.

Noise wise I’ve not noticed any difference Tbh
