Is it worth it? 6950 Toxic

The factory over clock and ability to unlock it to a 6970 seems too good to be true. However is it worth getting this model with its stock reference design over Asus/MSI with their custom 6950 coolers?

(also reports of cap squeeling on the sap card are worrying)

I am curious because its on sale today and is really tempting me as I am in the market for a BF3 Card.

afaik the card has vapor chamber so its better than the reference design
ppl say the cap squealing happens when its unlocked and stressed

im also interested on the toxic but the twin frozr3 is also great so its hard to make a decision lol

As has been said the TOXIC has a vapor chamber cooler so it's different than the reference design in that respect.

There seems a very good chance of unlocking the card at the flick of the BIOS switch.

There have been recent reports of the MSI TwinFrozR III and the HIS IceQ unlocking with a BIOS flash.

There's also a report of the Sapphire Dual Fan Edition unlocking using the BIOS switch.

As with all these HD 6950's you're taking a chance on them unlocking. The examples above may just be isolated instances of success.

The TOXIC does seem to be the one with the best chance of unlocking but nothing is guaranteed.

It's a great card.
Planning on buying a second soon for BF3.
Mine happily played BF3 at High with 40+ FPS. (1900x1200)
Mine happily unlocked the extra pipelines, an runs very cool, under load.
It would hit 70C with auto-fan at 25%.
Or 53C with manual-fan at 45%. An cooler with more fan speed.
Idles around 25C

As for Cap squeal, I only ever experienced this with V-sync off, an when in game menus allowed for 1000+FPS. Never noticed it under normal gaming, an especially not with V-Sync enabled.

An the £222 price is good. Still cheaper from competitors.

Thanks for the info guys, with it having a vapour chamber and with it able to be unlocked. I may just have to buy one of these. Don't think I can resist much longer.

It's hands down the best 6950 on the market. I bought two of those the other day and they both unlocked to 6970s out of the box with the flick of a switch. They produce virtually no noise and operate at great temperatures at high speeds. I should echo Surveyor's comment that the unlocks aren't guaranteed though, but it is an extremely high chance.

You'll also get Dirt 3 and Deus Ex: HR with it.

I am raging tried buying one from work and my bank locked me out from paying. Then paypal started asking me to confirm back account number which I don't have on me because I am at a different IP and now its too late.

Gutted :S

:( there will be more opportunities no doubt.

I was umming and arring.... watched it count from 11 down to 3 before making my mind up.

Just acquire bios (save first from GPU-Z) - acquire from RBE and do nothing else but unlock 6950-->6970 shader count. flash the bios with atiwinflash v 2.0.1.13 (.14 does not work)
