the graphics card on that (the X3100 Intel Graphics) wont play command and conquer or lord of the rings battle for middle earth well at all, im not sure it would even let you play them infact, the X3100 is ment to be aero compatible and do hi-definition decoding, it was really ment for gaming. really what you want is something with a Nvidia 8400GT maybe? im not sure what other graphics cards around that level are available from ATI though. also the price would be nearer £500 maybe £50 above or below

Well im not so much looking to spend that much i got my 360 and desktop pc for gaming but would be just nice have sumet to play just simple while on the travel

X3100 is much better than the old GMA chipsets, it does hardware T&L with the latest drivers. Lookie here for a benchmark, it shows running stuff such as FEAR and Far Cry on an older driver revision: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4154
The 8400GS is still faster, though.

yea in that link doom runs at 11fps lol, at the lowest resolution 640x480 too. its not a gaming card at all i personally think, i mean it struggles to play ravenshield the original game patched up to the latest v1.56.

Yeah, that's not good for gaming, plus 2 hr battery life is very low - that's 2 hrs when doing nothing btw so a lot lower when gaming. Plus acer don't have a good rep. If you're thinking you might play games on it then it's much better to get something that definitely can handle games. If you don't you'll wish you had.

Well, Doom 3 is OpenGL which IIRC has patchy support on the X3100 at the mo, and HDR is probably a bit too much for it. Still, the Far Cry result is better than what my old FX5600 achieved I think.

oh, for l aughs google around, someone tried to run Crysis on it!

I have seen Acer machines and the build quality / materials aren't great. They aren't that reliable. Customer support is said to be poor. Before buying I would suggest Googling Acer support and see what comments you come up with.

Personally, when it comes to buying laptops, I prefer to pay a bit more for a quality brand. I like Toshiba, Samsung and maybe Dell (quality/support not as good as the others but excellent value for money).

Apple make excellent notebooks but they are more expensive, but most Apple users seem to love 'em.

It really depends what C&C he wants to play. It will almost certainly play the originals with ease, but maybe not the new ones.
