Is it worth it?

It doesn't looks like the case supports an internal optical drive, due to sealed front. So if you buy and plan to install your own OS, bear that in mind. As I've no idea how easy XP is to install off a USB optical drive.

Also it's a very basic machine for onboard graphics, and only a PCI (not express) single expansion slot.

One of those with a different spec got 8/10 best buy status in Christmas issue Linux Format Magazine.

A major downside is the need for an external optical drive though.

I quite like the look of that. No cd drive isn't much of an issue, and I'm happy with onboard graphics most of the time.

Even if the OP is after windows, installing from usb crdom is identical to installing from internal cdrom. Alternatively, one can install XP from a usb stick, or temporarily connect an internal cd drive (by opening the case) in order to install XP. Many options :)

p.s. if the reason you don't need an os is linux, then installing from usb is easier again
