Is it worth it?

Go around their house and have a blast.

I'd say yes, it's worth it... but then I'm a gamer (mostly PC now though, but that's another topic) so I'd be biased in my opinion!

Lending out consoles is usually not done, go round to your friends place and play some games, i recommend it as the PS§ is an all in one entertainment system.

I'm seeing potential here beyond just a games console!

If you didn't already know you can stream films/music/photos from your laptop/pc wireless and you can also pick up the PlayTV kit which gives you a PVR (I pick up two recently at £15 each).

Plenty it can be used for other than gaming but it really comes down to how usefull it would be to you.

The PS3 is not just a great games machine. It's a better media server than the 360 (I had a 360 for 4 years till it died just before Xmas) and a better blu ray player than the Sony one I bought the other year.

Well worth buying. I've had mine for 3 weeks and I've had my monies worth out of it already.

I was going to sell my Ps3 about 18 odd months ago I think... I was advised of all the other features the PS3 has back then, and decided to give it another go..

I got a blu ray remote for it, used it as a media server using PS3 media server and its been excellent...

As I kept the machine, I then got some new games for it and now its the sole games console and media player in my entertainment center.. Its an excellent machine that plays games as well.. lol

My xbox360 RROD after I'd not used it for months, I got it repaired for free by MS and flogged it right afterwards...

If you do get one, I really hope you find a use for it.. nothing worse then forking out a few hundred quid to then not use it...

I couldnt really choose between my 360 and PS3 in terms of games but as an all rounder the PS3's media capabilites mean it gets a lot more use overall. Had a PS3 at launch and sold it after a while, got another one a couple of months back and I'd forgotten what a great piece of kit that console is. There werent a huge amount of games around when I sold my first one but now is a great time to pickup some quality older games for a few quid a piece.
Also OP, you can do it through the 360 as well but the PS3 has a great range of films to rent in standard and HD, they seem to be cheaper than Blockbuster as well.

Probably wont make any difference to the OP but one of my favourite things about the PS3 is buying content online, no stupid points system where youre often forced to buy more than you need. You just pay the exact price, might sound small but the 360's point system has always really annoyed me and the PS3 gets it absolutely right.

Pick one up 2nd hand... not sure how much they are going for, but you should save a few notes that way. Im sure you can always get one of those aftercare warrantys for a few quid a month to cover it a bit as well.
