I've been offered an Intel i5 2500k CPU for $170 which is roughly £110-£115 from a friend in America, the CPU has been used for 1 and a half years.

Is it worth buying? I'm buying it from a friend in America

Welcome.

Yeah, i paid £120 (delivered) for mine a few months ago. If you can knock a bit more off, winner. :)

You do have a compatible system right? or building one around this?

Yes, that is a good price, provided they haven't thrashed it past 5 GHz on sub-zero cooling and there is no damage to the pads etc. As mentioned above, make sure that you have a system compatible with LGA 1155 CPUs, or you are aware of the need for a new motherboard (and perhaps new RAM if you only have DDR2)

If it's your friend I think they can mark it as a gift. Look into it, otherwise, like ukxenon said you could be hit with an import tax bill that wipes out what you're saving!
