I was given a Sony Vaio VGN-N38E/W with 1.86ghz dual core intel T2130 and 1GB DDR2 667 ram (5300?).

It's slow and it needs a new battery. I'm thinking replace the battery for £20 and maybe get 4gb DDR2.

Will it be worth it or should I buy a new one?

Yeah why not man for the sake of £30 to bring it back upto scratch, if youre just using it it for lightweight stuff, see how you get on maybe get a cheap ssd

never had a laptop so not sure. very underpowered compared to desktop but that's a 2500+ @ 4ghz? with about 8gb and SSD drive.

or do you think going 2gb would be better value?

no point buying new parts so certain auction sites may be your best bet, surely spending £30-50 is better than spending £300-£500 on a laptop if youre just using it for browsing.

Im using a 7 year old Compaq Presario laptop as i type this, all ive dont is put in a cheap 2nd hand kingston ssd and added an extra gb of second hand ram, its running windows 7 and loads up and browses quickly and can even handle 720p video, which is all i need it for.
