Hey guys, ive been playing games on my pc via a 1080p 42 inch tv for about 3-4 years now. I migrated from playing consoles to pc and at the time of transitioning i couldn't afford to fork out for a monitor. I actually kind of liked the feeling of having a huge screen on my desk taking up my peripheral vision, that being said i can see pixels if i get about 3 feet from the screen and it has occasionally given me head aches. Anyway, my rig has got progressively better since then i get a sense that my tv's vga only capabilities might not be doing my system justice but monitors seem pretty damn expensive.
Is it time for me to get a monitor?

VGA?? surely you have HDMI on your tv if its 1080p

Tbh if your going for a monitor you have two options imho to make it worth while.

1 get a 1440p monitor like this.

YOUR BASKET
1 x DGM IPS-2701WPH 27" LED Widescreen Professional Monitor - Black £359.99
Total : £372.59 (includes shipping : £10.50).

or get 3 1080p monitors and play at 6k x 1080p

YOUR BASKET
3 x Samsung S22A200B 22" Widescreen LED Monitor - Glossy Black £129.95 (£389.85)
Total : £408.56 (includes shipping : £15.60).

If your just getting the one 1080p monitor i would say its a bit of a waste

yeah my tv has a hdmi port but it dosnt seem to work for my computer. I have two other mates that also have the same problem and have to resort to vga for their tv too. i take it as its just a pc to tv thing and it cant be solved, if anyone knows how they would make 3 very happy gamers. By the way thanks for the recommendations.

I used my £400 27" 1366*768 LCD tv as a monitor for ages. My friend put a keyboard through it this Christmnas and I replaced it with a 24" 1080p LED Monitor for about £150. The TV had better contrast and etc, even though it was from 2008 and not LED. I now have a 32" LG 1080p TV (£400) too and I would put it on my desk if I could ("height restrictions may apply") because its blacks are so much darker than my monitor and the colour is amazing. Compared to my monitor there are many different shades of black, so I can see in dark sections of games. But then I did buy a pretty low-mid range monitor, and this 32" TV is one of the more expensive ones, so not a fair comparison. But then a TV does so much more than a monitor...

I would stick with the TV. Or get a 32-37" TV with HDMI and use it as a monitor. Just my opinion. I totally understand about having the screen in your peripheral vision, it is like fullscreen for your eyes and really immersive!

There just plug and play, sometimes have to set up the pixel scaling but thats about it. Try posting "my tv isnt working on HDMI with nvidia 660" in the gpu section it may be a known and easy to fix fault.

Thanks for the advice man, i guess what i set out to do with this thread is get a sort of consensus of what people think about using hdtv's as monitors. I've always had a impression that its some sort of taboo especially once your system reaches a certain spec but from what you guys have said so far it looks like TVs are actually a rather good choice for the price.

I'm currently using a 42" HDTV as my center monitor and two HP 24" monitors as my side monitors.

It's totally awesome. In-fact I wish I didn't buy the three HP 24's and just brought two more 42" HDTV's. :/

Yes. Monitors are superior.

Tvs are riddled with bucketloads of input lag. And picture is meh

With monitors you have 2 different high end pathways:

-120hz @ 1080p for fluid responsive gaming and 3d
-high res displays (2560x1440 for example) on accurate panel tech (ips, pls etc)

A decent 1080p monitor is better than a 1080p TV for use with a computer end of. There is a reason they are expensive. TVs are horrible to play on when using a PC.

Just made the switch from a 40" TV to a 144hz 27" Asus, and for FPS games it feels much better and my KDR is much improved. The input lag makes a big difference, as does the higher frame rate of the monitor.

For single player games and things I play leaning back with my feet up though, I will miss the larger screen. Saints Row 3, Just Cause 2, etc. just beg to be played on a big screen console style with a joy pad :)

The HDTV am using right now isn't fancy or anything, but there is no input lag that I can detect and the picture is clear and bright, can't really see the pixels unless I rub my face up against the screen and I sit about 2 or 3 feet from it when playing games.

dowcow, it's interesting you say your KDR has improved because when I started to use my 40" (including eyefinity) my KDR got a lot better.

But anyway, in the end, I don't think input lag really makes a difference with today's monitors or tv's, maybe it did 10 or so years ago.
