Is it worth me getting a Sound Card?

Hey all,

Quick question... I am currently using an ASUS Z170-A Motherboard, my speakers are Presonus Eris E4.5 and my headphones are Sennheiser HD 280 Pro.

I am currently looking at moving onto a headset for gaming (looking at the Sennheiser Game One at the moment), and it has made me look into a Sound Card.

I use my PC mainly for Gaming, Spotify/YouTube and the odd movie.

Is there any worth in me getting a Sound Card for my use? Or would it be a waste of my money?

I’m not sure I would be interested in spending too much money - probably wouldn’t go further than an ASUS Xonar SE.

Thanks,

Marky

I think that a decent external DAC/amp can make a difference, but in my limited experience it depends upon:

  • Quality of listening device
  • Quality of onboard audio
  • Whether you're experiencing any EMI
  • Source
I bought myself a Musical Fidelity V90-HPA last year, and it was a great purchase. I was able to eliminate EMI I was getting and it gives me the freedom to buy headphones my onboard audio would typically struggle driving without interference.
