Hi All,

I want to play Half Life Alyx on VR and was wondering if its worth getting a Oculus Quest 2 headset with the following specs:

i5 4670k
16GB RAM
XFX RX 580 8GB Graphics card

Would appreciate responses thanks!

I know I probably wouldn't get the extreme high quality however what's your experience like with something similar to this spec is it still worth getting?

Regards

It ran OK on my 1070 which the 580 is similar to. I imagine no issues other than you have an XFX but that can't be helped :D

580 is more like the 1060, and it's worse for the Link cable because AMD's encoder is rubbish on the 580.

You are on the bare minimum needed to run. You will have to set everything on low settings. It will run, that's all I can say.

Thanks all.

How are the low settings? I was thinking the 8GB Video Ram will probably help, is the low settings still enjoyable on VR?

The 8GB ram won't help at all, your video card doesn't have the grunt for the memory to become a factor.

Depends on your really. Some people are fine on low settings, other people can't stand using low settings. Half Life Alyx has been done amazingly well though, so you should find that it looks ok.

Thanks! I think I'm going to go for a Oculus Rift S...

Why the rift s surely the quest 2 is the better route

I was looking at a comparison and thought the Rift S might be better but as i am digging deeper, it seems the quest 2 might be better than the rift s... But I need this link cable to achieve this (doesn't look too expensive though). Plus the Quest 2 looks cheaper so if its actually better than the Rift S I'll go for this one.

they dont support the Rift S anymore
Quest 2 is what they support and it keeps getting better to a point it will be just as good as the rift s
and its wireless
including PCVR (Virtual desktop)

A quick google search appears to show allot of users having issues with AMD graphics cards particularly RX 580 with the link cable however this appears to be with the latest drivers coding compatibility.. Does anyone know if this is fixed or if your on latest driver for RX 580 and its working fine for you?

If you only want to play Half Life Alyx and have no interest in VR outside of that, Get the Rift S for as cheap as you can get one.

But, if you are interested in playing more VR games and playing games without wires then get the Quest 2. There are games that you can play on the Quest 2 that you don't even need a PC for.

Thank you mate that's useful to know. How comes Quest 2 seems to be cheaper than Rift S or am I looking at the wrong thing lol

If all you want to play is Alyx, get a used Quest (the first gen one). They go for buttons.

If you want to explore VR gaming, get the Quest 2. The Rift line is discontinued. Unless you find one really cheap on the used market, it's best avoided now (in most cases).

i've just been playing halflife alyx on a quest 2 wifi streaming the pc only has a 980 so everything is set to low.... still pretty good though
