Is it worth Overclocking 6970 CF

Best way to find out is to give it a try and see.

Your average framerates should rise but whether you will able to tell the difference in game is entirely subjective.

simple answer yes it's worth it

you could get near double the FPS depending on game

Seriously? I would like to see some proof of that.

I have never heard of overclocking giving near double the fps in any game before.

However, if you misread the OP and thought he asked "Would going crossfire be worth it?", then yes, in some cases, it will give near double the performance in some games ;)

An update

overclocked the core to 935mhz on stock volts (temp touching 70oc on custom fan profile)

on 940mhz it crashes

I'm using Heaven to bench

I am only adjusting core at the moment.

I want to push core further to about 1000mhz (in small increments of course)

2 questions really. What is the safe max volts I can give this card to push core further?

Also what is "Power Limit %" in MSI Afterburner?? shall I adjust this before I unlock the core voltage feature?

Yes it's worth oc'ing them.

I had two 6950's unlocked shaders running a 25% oc(800Mhz stock)@1000MHz, on AC Extreme Coolers.

I gave them a custom bios flash with RBE they were the fastest air cooled 6950's@OcUK:D:

The 6950's above and some below were under water, mines were air cooled beasts:

Power Limit always to +20% when oc'ing, you can up the volts in small increments and keep an eye on the temps and use Heaven/3D Mark or Sleeping Dogs(it's a killer stress BM btw), it will show up dodgy clocks.

You can increase the Power Limits up to +50% too, that might help also, but always keep an eye on the temps:

ok update number 2

increased core voltage to 1.20V

that got me to 945 on core
crashes on 950
max temp around 75oC
fans at 63% (pretty audible)

think I have reached my core limit as I dare not increase the voltage any more

Tommybhoy whats the max I should push on Core Volts on stock coolers?

Power Limits up to +50% too

how do you do this in afterburner?

1st, when going for max clocks, always run the fan@100%, yes it's noisy, but better safe than sorry.:)

Each card is different, if you are comfortable with the temps, it's fine running up to 90c, so it's up to you if you want to take it further with the volts or not, take it in small steps, it can take a while, but it's the only way to find out what's stable or not.

Once you find the limit on the core, reset the core, then start on the vram, when finished, knock off a few Hz from your max stable core/vram clocks and put them both together and see if it's fine. :)

thanks for the advice

I'm watching the temps like a hawk and while I am overclocking adjusting the custom fan profile to suit the overheating needs.

any decent software for reading VRM temps

how to I go beyond the 950mhz barrier in Afterburner?

GPU-z from here, to log vrms:

UPDATE

I have found the max for my GPU's

its 1.250V
970 on core
temps around 73-74oC max
at 65% fan speed.

now the thing I found VERY strange is that if set my CPU back to 880 MHz and start overclocking my memory on the same voltage...

I cant even make a 10MHZ jump from 1375 to 1385 as the scores in Heaven drop???? :-/ does that mean the memory wont even overclock for me?? or am I doing something wrong??
