Is it worth overclocking.

after overclocking my 920 to 3.2ghz in my sleep after being scared to for 6 months im thinking i should have done it earlier. the only problem i had was i had to downclock my ram even though it was allready running below the rated speed of 1600mhz i think this is because i am scared to up the ram voltage to 1.66 with the bios warning so stays at 1.64 which is below the 1.65 rated voltage because for some reason te mobo wont do that.

I have added no voltage to reach this overclock so really shouldnt make processor last less time. and even if you do have to add volts it might last 5 years instead of 10 years! oh no! start with a small overclock and see how it goes. if the worst happens and you get a blank screen and no boot you just have to reset cemos. i had this trying to overclock a 9450 on a old board that didnt properly support the proccessor.

the other side of the coin though i tested with age of conan and noticed no difference whatsoever!

i think the 6000 is the one that's 3ghz and overclocks to about 3.1-3.2ghz so might not be worth it if you arn't comfortable overclocking.

Is it worth overclocking.
Hey Jaded Raver,

in a funny way that question is a bit like asking "Is it worth driving your car faster than the speed-limit"

Overclocking/Tweaking is only one part of the computer experience but most of us here on these forums would consider ourselves Mechanics if you will and just can't seem to get enough speed! :p

I think overclocking is fun and challenging although with the crazy powerful hardware we have now I don't think most tasks will have any problems running smoothly even with the kit running at stock speeds! :o

The one thing that put me off overclocking is the fact it requires more power to run, more power drawn from the grid and larger electricty bills £££ :(

I'd say most people overclock for fun now although I'm sure a few people do really benefit from the extra GHz like back-to-back Video-Encoding/Rendering dudes and anyone who is involved in heavy duty computational tasks that normally take one to ten hours to complete . . . . shaving several hours from a task due to overclocking/tweaking must be very satisfying!

It depends on what your computer is for.

Mine is a mixture of work/entertainment, work wise i'm stuffed if my PC goes down. My last 2 mainboards failed, so I'm reluctant to but any extra stress in this area.

Besides all this it's an i5, and other then video encoding it's fast enough for anything I ask of it. I will overclock, but only when I feel I have a need for the extra speed.

Look at it this way: you can only break something if you don't do your research of if you go diving in at it. Take your time, do it right and it'll be worthwhile. I put off doing it for ages too as I was scared of breaking my precious PC. I've got an E6750 which at stock is 2.66 Ghz - I've got mine at 3.2 atm, and would push it more but I think I'd probably fry my 680i's northbridge chip haha.

OCing won't double your FPS, but a good stable OC will add a few, and liek the lads have said, it's something for nothing (well, maybe a bit of stress the first time :D)
