From a 512MB MSI ATI RX1950PRO-VT2D512E at the moment, or am I better waiting for a price drop on the 8800 series when the new 9800 series comes out?

Incidentally any solid rumours regarding a release date for the 9800 series?

I'd suggest getting a GT because they can be had for under £150 now. The GTS is not worth an extra £50 if you are concerned about cost.

A cheaper 8800GT gets my vote also!

The new 8800GTS 512MB is really nice and has a great cooler etc but the premium over the 8800GT is a bit much.

8800GT + Accelero S1 + couple of bottles of champagne with the savings lol! ;)

If you have a wad of cash and can't be bothered with modding a card then the 8800GTS 512MB makes more sense I guess. . .

Any particular brand/model that's good for o/cing? :)
BTW at that price I'm assuming your talking about a 256Mb model?

Most 512Mb seem to be about the £175 mark, the GTS I can pick up for about £205

Here's another vote for the 8800GT (or an 8800GTX if you want bigger bang). Personally the price of the GTS puts me off with the GTX so close to it, but either way you're going to see a huge improvement. :)

im going from a 1950 pro 256, to a 8800 GT 512

the GTS was SLOWER in the reviews i read, unless u get the 512Mb cersion, not the 640Mb, but in terms of value for money, get the 8800 GT OC edition

I'm looking forward to your user feedback when you get the 8800GT installed

Have you made any steps towards selling your old X1950Pro?

no, becuase im using the bugger :p :D (ive put it on my for sale thread saying it will be avalible soon though)

im downloading Crysis demo again, gonna try it with my X1950 PRO in, and then wack the 8800 GT in, so whats fps i can do at what detail :) should be fun!

also got oblivion to try out, thats a real hog of a game!

I have just finished looking through a load of benchmarks regarding 8800GT vs 8800GTS.

Believe me, you'll want to get an 8800GT :)

Apparently Crysis plays very well on high using an 8800GT. Although I have not tried this yet, do not have the game yet!

indeed!

I was looking about upgrading to a HD3850, all the benchmarks I looked at was between the HD3850, HD3870, 8800 GT, 8800 GTS and the winner was the 8800 GT for value for money, but if u want a card around the £100 mark get the HD3850

my 8800 GT OC edition cost me £165

That seems to be the general consensus on these boards and others.

My BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC2 512MB card will be arriving tomorrow. Just in time for some Christmas gaming. Crysis demands my attention! I can’t believe I have lasted this long…

Depends what res you play at and also depends on what you consider 'smooth' gameplay. . . This is a set of benches I did using an 8800GT and the Crysis demo benchmark. . .

1280x1024 was not quite as smooth as I would like when using all 'High' settings. Switching everything to medium improved framerates nicely. . .

I'm sure with a bit of overclocking and a bit of game tweaking you will be able to find a personal sweetspot. I game at 1920x1200 so I had to use Medium details to keep it sweet. . .

This was with a 2MB Conroe clocked at 2800MHz. The thing with Crysis is that 'medium' detail is similar to 'high' on most other games, 'high' details on Crysis is similar to 'very high' on other games etc

Its a very good looking game but I am not playing through it for the first time until I get the right set-up.

I cannot quote competitors, but decent brand 512mb versions can be had for under 150 from reliable retailers. I am sure OcUK will drop prices soon as well.

Wait untill the new year, after the Christmas rush, and then get a GT, best band for buck now, will be a steal when the price starts to come down.
