Is it worth upgrading to NTL 10MB?

Currently on their 2mb service, it's been great, no problems with it for the years I've had it and very good speeds. 75GB would be enough for me.

As I understand it all speeds will be put to 10mb by the end of 2006? Is this still the case? I'm considering paying the extra £10 a month and going to 10mb this week. What sort of speeds are people getting who are already on this service?

I was on 10meg ntl. It was very fast for me, I was getting around 9.5mbps.
Dropped a bit sometimes at night . I used up the 75 gig very quickly , think I downloaded about 1 terebit before running low on space .
they nver sent me a warning email or letter about it :)
I did not want to risk getting one so I went back to 2meg because theres no download limits, even now im getting between 3-6 mbps download rate.

I play EQ2 and while im downloding in the background I dont notice any lag.

I play World of Warcraft and I used a benchmark program to measure how much data I am uploading/downloading while the game is running. It turned out to be 3.6 megabytes upload and 3.6 megabytes download per hour, which a 56k modem can do quite easily!

Back on topic, I think that 2 Mbps is enough for 95% of the Internet community. You would only want the 10 Mbps service if you constantly download massive applications and game demos - e.g. Star Wars Galaxy at around the 250 megabyte mark. Also, Service Pack II for Windows XP around 233 megabytes.

i'm getting around 800kb/s max

1250 is the theoretical max, so i might try without my router + switches to see if its faster!

Umm, yes, online games do only send small amounts of data.

Its how long the data takes to reach you (latency) that affects how "smooth" the game plays.

If you were on 56k, you would get "lag" where the game would seem to stop for a few seconds, and you would "warp" around the map etc.

upgraded and getting about 4mb speeds at best. That's plugged direct into the modem, no firewalls, nothing else running, and off peak hours.

Might ring ntl and see if they can send me a new modem, mine's years old and only has a 10mb interface.

NTL state that its upto 10mb, if you read the NTL forums a lot of people havent been getting anywhere near the 10mb speed.

It all depends on where you live in the country, contention ratio in your area, and the time of day your using the service.

Here in stoke I can download at 1.1mb/sec between 12am-4pm no problem. After 4pm the speed slows down and it drops to anything from 400k+

NTL wont change your modem im afraid, like I say they say its 'upto' 10mb, so unless your getting serious problems, sub 300k/sec they dont normally think its a problem and dont look into it.

I have 10 meg and think its not needed to be honest.
I have noticed no better online game play No lower pings and like always there are very few resources where i can actually take advantage of my speeds because of Capps.
I am not into downloading music etc or massive files so all in all having 10meg is purely a Willy wave.
And thats the truth of it. ;)

Also NTL will upgrade your modem to the nice little blue one. They did for me after one moany phone call.

NTL are ok as long as they are getting your money, wait until you come to cancel! My advice stay away they dont call them NT HELL for nothing...
