Is it worth upgrading?

I am doing a partial system overhaul for christmas, by getting a new CPU (5820k), Motherboard, RAM (16GB) and Case (Phanteks Enthoo Luxe) and had a side-thought of doing a GPU upgrade while im at it, but with my R9 290 running hot and loud, not being attractive at all, it is a good card, and i play with headphones so it dosen't really bother me too much (although i will probably get a Kraken G10 and watercooler if i keep it).
I dont have the money to be putting into a 980Ti, most i would have is like £300 after selling my 290.
Is it worth going to a 390(x) or a 970?
Or would it be better to get another 290 and put them on a loop or something?

Any ideas are welcome lads, cheers!

970 in that case. The 290 should do it fine and the 970 would be more of a side grade. If you have the money put it in a loop or get a 1440p monitor to give you an excuse to upgrade to a 980Ti ;) :D

Chances are ill go with the loop as it makes my life easier haha!
I would go 1440p, but i love ultrawide... I know i can go 3440x1440, but i dunno, i like how my monitor matches my TV in size, looks awesome aswell, the colours are absolutely stunning...

I thought a 970 and a 290 were roughly the same speed?

Hmm for some reason I have never looked up 290 and 970 benchmarks
in direct comparison... Just did it now and it seems the 290 is only a few FPS behind, and this is bearing in mind, the reviewer had the reference 290 and a Asus Strix 970 so there isnt much OC headroom on the 290!

That's what a side grade is :p

Yeah, now ive looked, a 970 is pointless.. Seems the only thing that i could do is get a 980Ti but that is most probably out of my budget ;)

Wait, as the new equivalent of the 970 will probably sit between the 980 and 980ti if the last series gains are anything to go by.
