Is Linux the better choice over Vista?

Has anyone decided to ditch Vista and switch to Linux instead and would like to share their experiences and good/bad points about such a move?

Recently I have considered a move like that particularly because Vista has problems running older games and even more recently (after installing Vista SP1) I couldn't even install games because a blue screen would occur while the installer copied the game from the DVD (I had to disable DMA on the DVD drive to stop the blue screens from occuring).

The main aspect of Linux I'm wondering about is it's ability run newer games for example I recently purchased three copies of C&C3 Tiberium Wars so I can play multiplayer over LAN with my two kids.

Most of the other games we play are older so I'm thinking they'll probably already be compatible with Wine or whatever I'll need to learn about to run Windows games on Linux.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I use Linux as well as Vista and OSX. If you use the seamless virtualisation with virtualbox, you can pretty much run any game in Linux, but the performance is never going to be as good as it is native. I've used it on some old game and it was fine, but I'd be dubious about whether it'd be playable with a game like Tiberium Wars

Thanks for the info on VirtualBox as I just did a search about it and likely it would be useful to retain at least one Windows PC for situations where I needed to run something like IE or whatever and it appears I could actually do that remotely over the network while using any of the PCs with Linux installed.

Some of the other multiplayer games we play are Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Unreal Tournament 2004 (I suspect there is a native Linux client for that).

Ideally if I did switch from Vista to Windows I could also do the same for all our PCs and there would also be the need for my kids single player games to be able to run well too.

I would stick with windows if your main priority is gaming, Linux would be too much hassle to get configured to play all your games.

As a sidenote, IE 6 and even 7 run marvelously in Wine.

And they're safe to use under wine as well. Unlike in windows :p

As much as I love linux I would also be wary if your predominantly a gamer, yes you can get almost everything working to various degrees but it can be a bit of a hard slog. Dual boot would be my choice.

Why do people ditch Windows for Linux and then fudge Windows applications to run on Linux !

It is on a par with a man having a sex change, sleeping with a woman and then saying he is a lesbian.

In the case of applications it's because people think they still need those applications they have been running under windows for years, when in fact there are generally equally good (sometimes better) replacements. With games of course this is not the case as 99% of new games will only run under windows natively, so the decision to move to Linux for whatever it may be, stability, Open Source, speed, power etc has to be tempered with the need to 'fudge' games to work. (Personally I dual boot. Windows for games Linux for everything else.)

Gee I sure have a lot of round pegs. I love these round pegs. I paid a lot of money for them. I wonder how I could fit them into this nice square hole...

:p

The main problem with linux these days is games support. If gaming is a priority then linux is a bad choice. For everything else, it is a better choice in my opinion. People want to be able to use a good OS but still play their games. Thats why wine/cedaga are out there.

Sabayon Linux shows how well Linux can play 3D Games.

I have to admit that I too love my games and I love Linux.

I got to be brutally honest with myself however, but Linux, while a million times improved over only a short while back, is still leagues behind Windows in the gaming territory.

UT2K3+4, Doom and the Quake Series all have scripts, and will install natively in Linux, and as has been mentioned, UT2K3/4 are bundled with the scripts to get playing and I am pleased to say that it runs flawlessly - last time I tried it with Manrake 10 on a nVIDIA 6600GT AGP Card and I found it smoother than Windows XP played it, so positive potential.... Not tried it recently or on Sabayon so I will do that probably tomorrow.
