last night is was getting some bit for my pc when my friend asked if it was time to up grade from his Pentium 4 pc.... my reply was hell yes. so we set about getting him a good pc for £300ish

i ordered him from OcUK:
OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive
Thermaltake VK60001W2Z Element S Case - Black
XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
Zalman CNPS10X Extreme CPU Cooler
Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

and from the MM we got
AMD Phenom II X6 1090t
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H

but now he is asking would it be worth adding a second ssd on more ram. my reply was i dont know so am asking you lot. with the spec pc he just made would a second ssd and 4gb extra ram add much real world power?

with the board been sata 2 i did not know if it would hold the ssd'd back when trying to run raid. and with todays basic pc need's is 8gb of ram needed.

his old pc was 500mb ram with a P4 2.8 hyper threading i think the jump in power would be so much that a second ssd and more ram would be lost and should be saved till latter.

Even 60GB can fill up very quickly, with a 120GB there's more scope to install a few games, all your applications and obviously Windows 7. You may was well grab 2x4GB, get the cheapest 1600mhz kit IMO. The Kingston Red is on offer this week. Either way, it'll be a massive upgrade from what he's currently got.

You could get another ssd and just have it as a separate drive like I do. Install steam games and move them to this drive (google the method/prog w/e)

Wouldn't bother with raiding tbh

i only use raid to stop the need to faf about with more then 1 drive when staving files

What's he planning on doing with it? Given that he's still using a P4, I'm guessing not gaming? If so, a 60gb SSD should be plenty, providing he's disciplined enough to use a 500gb for storage. I only use mine for apps (elements, lightroom, DXO, office etc) and it's about 75% full (games and docs are on the F3s).

8 gig of ram is the new 4 gig.

remember years ago 4 gig was the most we ever needed for gaming, now 8 gig is more standard.

with ssd on sata 2 u only notice a differenbce in speed when benchmarking. ie if u put sata 2 next to a sata 3 the difference isnt that noticeable because they are so fast anyway.

Thats not really true, 4 gig is plenty enough for almost all games.
People are just opting for 8 gig because it's so cheap currently, like hard drives used to be.

4GB is enough for many games but it;s not enough for something like BF3 for example.

Seeing as it's so cheap if you are buying from scratch now it seems a waste not to get 8GB. I added 4GB later and have 4 x 2GB sticks, means I am stuffed if I want more :p

Hi there,

May I ask what your friend plans to use the PC for?

If your order for the Vertex 2E hasn't been shipped yet then I would personally cancel it.
For the same money you could get a newer generation drive like the OCZ Agility 3.

However, if he thinks 60GB won't be enough storage space for a primary drive then I would again cancel the vertex 2 order and go for a nice current-gen 120/128GB SSD like this one.

As for RAM, you may not need it now, but may in the future. Since the price per GB of a 8GB kit is less than 4GB kit - then I would get something like this now.

8 Gig is definately the new 4 gig, I know I'm still o 4 Gb until my next build lol

I'll probably be going for 16Gb for futureproofing, but 8GB is what you need now for the latest games really.

To the Op: for your friends uses 4Gb will be plenty but memory is so cheap at the moment I don't see many reasons not to get 8Gb.
