So with my i5 2500k 4.5 @ 1.2xv with -.500 or .05 offset. I’m getting watchdog blue screens every once in a while usually when just idling or running kodi. Google says it’s to do with my overclock so I set it to auto which brings it up to 1.352v.
I think this is a little high iirc max v is 1.350v anyway starting from -.06 I have worked down to -.010v and it’s done 20 rounds of ibt without issue at 1.272v.

I recall that oc’ing reduces the life of the cpu, this is my second pc and first go at building and oc.

So is this my cpu about to die? Just want a heads up as my 9 290 is starting to struggle so it’s buy a gpu now and end up with a dead cpu or buy new cpu and live with console graphics until I have the money for a new gpu
 
Try it without an overclock at factory defaults. Have you checked the temperatures? Have you repasted recently?

Yes, overclocking can cut the life of a CPU by more than 50% depending on various factors. But seeing as a CPU should last for at least 20 years, most people don't notice.
 
In my experience BSOD is usually due to ram.
Definitely run Memtest to prove your ram is not faulty (or causing faults because it is overclocked). You may want to run overnight as it takes bloody ages checking my 16GB ram!

You are correct that overclocking a cpu reduces the life of it and at 4.5Ghz it sounds like you've been ragging the nuts off it :). It could be fine though. Following memtest knock 100mhz off your overclock (drop the multiplier by 1) to see if the issue goes away.
 
Will do memtest, I repasted a while back when I stripped and cleaned my loop last summer I think.

It doesn’t happen when I’m playing games, I can game all day without issue. It’s just randomly when I leave it on all night running kodi, trouble is it’s random and I have had cpu v at 1.352 and it’s not happened since. Voltage is now 1.272 so I’ll see how it goes.

I haven’t oc’d the memory as I had to reduce v as it was using way over Sandy’s safe limit for memory, but I’ll definitely do memtest.
Like to see how razen 3 performs and upgrade, I should get a few FPS on top of the cpu by switching to pci 3

Whea uncorrectable error. I played an hr and a bit of new dwan closed game and left on kodi for 2 hrs, just came up to check up on the pc and I have blue screen. I’ll run memtest before adjusting frequency.
 
So it benches/games fine and only crashes in one specific program (Kodi), assuming it’s passes a memtest, perhaps investigate the software issue rather than assuming it’s a hardware issue just because someone, somewhere had a problem that’s similar and said it was overclock related.
 
When my 2500k died last year after having it at 4.8 for 7 or so years I replaced it with a £50 Xeon e3-1270, basically an i7 2600. It was much better overall with the extra 4 threads even though the clock speeds are lower.
So if you want a cheap upgrade to last a couple months/a year consider that CPU :D I gave that machine to my bro when I got a r5 2600 as he still had an E8400 Dual Core
 
I had my old i5 2500k at 4.9ghz 1.45v for 7+ years without problems, it needed slightly more voltage for the same oc towards the end of its use but not much at all. So have no fear in giving it extra volt loving if you have good cooling :)

Not just kodi on desktop aswell, kodi buzzes when it crashes but not desktop I get watchdog and uncorectable blue screens. Memtest shows 0 errors.
 
Mines still going strong 1.2 volts is very low for these all that happens is its gradually ran out of stabilty at that voltage

I run my dynamic so the voltage clocks down with speed step think im +0.195 4.2 ghz
 
I still can't decide between getting a 2600k or 3770k to last me a little while longer above my i5 2500k (only got running at 4.4ghz)!?

I was set on the 3770k as it looks like it performs better than the 2600k.......however all this delidding business and it running hot with poor CPU paste under the lid is confusing me somewhat on whats best course of action.
2600k is around £90 and 3770k around £130

I have just upgraded from 8 to 16gb of DDR3 memory (though only corsair vengence 1600 LP) and got a Vega 56 for 1080p gaming.
My 2500k is running 100% when playing Division 2.

Would a 2nd hand 2600k be better due to being soldered or is the 3770k heat not an issue? Just with them both being older chips?

Waiting for the next zen chips and having to do MB/Memory/CPU and prob PSU would no doubt be very expensive, so looking for some longevity.

Any thoughts folk?
 
why not get a xeon? if its just a stop gap CPU a stock speed xeon say 1275 would easy out perforum the 2500k and would cost £40/£50
the money your spending on ram and a 3770k would buy you a 1600 > 8gb of ddr4

2600k vs 3770k is next the nothing. buy the 2600k and push it to 4.5ghz+
 
you wont see much of an upgrade going 2600k from 2500k, running at 1005 sounds like it could be another issue not aware of any game that east 100% of a cpu

well he definitely will, 4 to 8 threads with today games is a large upgrade. 2500k at any speed just can game anymore. 2600k's are still killing 1080p

the problem is the number of threads, GPU's now days can do 1080p all day long so the demand on the CPU to keep it is getting more and more, having extra threads will help a lot with this problem.


I my self had a i5 6600(@4.4Ghz) and it as at 100% load all the time, and games got very choppy in heavy action. dropping a 6700k in at stock speeds dropped cpu load to 65% and overclocking to 4.55Ghz dropped load to 45%/50%
