Is my 2900Pro Faulty?

I have connected my new 2900Pro using both PCI-E connectors on my Corsair HX520 psu but it refuses to post. There is a red LED on the card that blinks twice at regular intervals but nothing display on the screen.

A highly overclocked 8800GTS works and I have a quality PSU so I think the card is DOA. Both PCI-E connectors work fine and I have tried disconnecting everything else from the mobo and resetting bios - no luck.

Mobo is an ASUS P5N-E. Any ideas?

That red light usually means there isn't enough power being supplied to the card, that means the PSU is faulty/not good enough which I highly doubt as the Corsair 520 is a very good PSU. I'd say the card is dead, try it in another PC.

Make sure it's properly seated in the PCI-E slot. Sometimes, when using short motherboard stand-offs the plate on the card hits the bottom of the case, forcing it upwards and out of the slot.

Either that or the card's dead, PSU is more than adequate.

I hotwired another PSU to run the 2900 on its own. Still did not work. The PSU was only an Antec Smartpower 380W but it should be enough to run just the GC.

11.92v measured with a multi meter from both PCI-E connectors. This fluctuates by only 0..02v when my GTS is installed and fully loaded (at 648core/1620shader/2000mem clocks).

edit
It seems that the 2nd connector (the 6pin one) might be faulty. I

1. No PCI-E connections - Fan runs at 100% and mobo sirens. Red light constantly lit.
2. 8pin + 6pin connected - Fan on low, mobo waits 20secs before sirens, Red light blinks twice, pause, blinks twice etc.
3. 6pin + 6pin connected - Same ads 2.
4. 8pin connector only - Same as 2
5. 6pin (2nd connector) only - Same as 1

It seems that the 2nd 6pin slot is not delivering power to the card. The pins all look ok and I know my 2 PCI-E feeds are fine.

The Corsair is perfectly up to the task of power and overclocked 2900xt let alone a standard 2900pro. The corsair has 2 dedicated pci-e connectors, are you definately using those, or are you using molex to pci-e convertors? (I know you said it but just checking).

Sounds like a dead card to me unless it's a seating or bios issue. Have you tried resetting the bios?

Matthew

I'll try resetting the bios on my mobo. If that fails I'll flash it with the latest P5N-E bios and try again, but card should atleast post a fault message on the screen.

The card is NOT faulty. It just does not like my P5N-E motherboard.

I dug out an old MSI K8N SLI and the card works fine with both my Corsair and Antec PSU's connected.

*I have removed evry other component from my P5N-E and tested with just CPU + RAM + GC connected and it fails to output.
*I have checked the card is fully seated correctly in both PCI-E slots and it is.
*Mobo BIOS has been updated (several versions tested) and CMOS reseet. Same result each time.

I guess the Mobo and GC do not like eachother. Perhaps the 2900 tries to draw too much power from the PCI-E slot or something.

Anyway, where am I liklely to stand with returning the 2900Pro? Can I claim it is unfit for purpose?

Did you buy it online and how long ago, I think you have 7 days to return under the distance selling act if it was purchased online.

That's interesting. I am about to build a system for a friend and the Asus P5N-E SLI 650i was on my list for the motherboard, and likely to use a 2900pro or 8800gtx for him. Have you made sure it's in x16 mode and the bios is set to give enough power to the PCI-E slot?

It was purchased online but the box has been opened and the damn thing works. I call the retailer and see what they say.

There are no settings for PCI-E power or to force x16 mode in bios. The only options are for SLI which are disabled by default.

Have you tried it in the other slot, or tried each slot WITH SLI enabled?

Matthew
I have tried both slots but not yet tried enabling SLI. SLI is for NVidia cards only so would probably cause more issues than it solves. Plus it will reduce the PCE-E slots to 8x.

This is !%*#ing me off. Damn both ASUS and ATI.

Ok, it's going back under Distance Selling Regulations for a full refund. It works on two out of four motherboards I have tried, but crucially not on the one I want it to. I'm just glad I bought it from a decent etailer that don't quibble over refunds. Most places would argue a bit before giving in.
