I am looking at purchasing the Dynaudio Audience 42's just want some input, will my Audiolab 8000s be able to handle the speaker well ? I will be listening to a pair on my day off next week :) anyone had any experience ? I heard they need a powerful amp. thank you

Hi lakitu,

Don't see there'd be much of a problem. The audiolabs are great amps and the dynaudio's, while having a low ohm rating, tend to be moderately awkward to drive rather than hard.

The 8000s is a gutsy little amp so i wouldn't worry.

I'd say you'll be fine unless of course you were planning to play at volume in a particularly large room.

Nice amp by the way - always wanted an 8000! :)

As for the dynaudio's... don't even get me started! :( :p

The above should take you to a review of them, hope it helps.

The safest thing to do would be to hook them up to the Audiolab and see how they go, as even if the amp can drive them its the overall sound thats important.

I once paid silly money for a set of speakers i auditioned in a shop. They sounded fine with his system but when i got them home they were a complete mismatch with the rest of my system.

Don't make the same mistake i did - make sure you audition them in your system!

I have pair of 42's, great little speaker, when driven properly... From past experience of Audiolab stuff, 8000a, the original stuff, it will drive them fine, but I would expect the sound to be a bit flat and lifeless, boring and grey sterile maybe... not bad, try it and see....... that's just how I found Audiolab in the past. The Dyn's need a bit more forward upfront amp, nothing to laid back as they then don't wake up....

thank you for the review it made a good read, I am alittle concerned about the audiolabs laid back approach espesh when coupled with the 42's, I just fell in love with the 42's when I saw and read about them...will see next week :) thank you

Shouldn't think it's a problem, the S does run quite hot with 4Ohm speakers, so make sure nothing ontop of the amp. Could look into 8000SX later on

If/when I ever get around to upgrading my speakers to the Dynaudio loudspeakers that I want, I will partner my MF pre to an MF poweramp with a bit more guts to do the job.

No way in hell would I hook them up to an audiolab amp!

EDIT: That link was interesting reading and for once a hifi company is talking in real numbers that have real meaning. On their scale thingamy, my hifi setup rates at around that touted 106dB figure at my listening position. No wonder I love it so much :D

So if i hook a cheap 1kw pa amp to a set of super sensitive (and cheap) speakers it would sound even better than your setup since it could do 110db+?

Think that scale is just a bit of fun. :p

My Cyrus smartpower and Pacific PI-40's come out at 100db which i know is complete tosh anyway since my soundlevel meter has recorded a comfortable 110db in a decent sized room.

To the op, if you can, audition the speakers with your own amp and source as that would obviously be ideal.

No of course not - but nor did I say that outright power gave the whole picture. I merely commented on that piece using proper numbers.

Your 110dB will of course include reverberations from your "decent sized" room. Doubt you were using a decent SLM though :)

Just thought your point was a little misleading. Wouldn't help people who knew any better.

If it was explained as you have above then that would have been fine.

No need to get so upset my man! ;)

DRZ, what MF kit do you own incidentally?

Always wanted some of their X range kit!

Would've loved a pre amp, set of X-A200's and an X-RAY! Amazing looking stuff!

forget the pre-amp and a brace of X-A200's, just get the MF A5, the things a beast :D

250wpc (700w+ consumption so you know its true...heh) of gorgeous neutral power......makes my MA GR10 speakers sing with anything......and although its using conventional hifi dimensions, not the ovoid tube shape of the old X series, it still looks amazing with those kit rack style handles and huge, weighty yet well oiled volume control :D

so glad i bought it.......i entered their competition to write a review, i got past the first round *shows off his MF watch* and now waiting to hear on the final, so hoping I win, partly because it would be fun to write a review for a national hifi magazine, but also I get to win the matching CD player for my amp :D and at £1,500 a pop thats a nice saving...heh

Good man!

Let us know how you get on.

Best of luck to you! :D

Why not? They're quite capable amps, able to drive a lot of kit thanks to decent power and an ability to pump 25amps

Audiolab / Tag McLaren amps I have tested in the past showed a demonstrable lack of grunt when driving fairly difficult 8 ohm loads. Even more difficult 4 ohm loads have no chance! My amp can pump up to somewhere around 70A IIRC and even this struggled with properly driving the bigger Dynaudios at the really heavy workloads.

gt_junkie: I currently own an A3 preamp of theirs :)
