Hi all

I have bought a 7900gto to replace my aging 6800GT (agp). I also bought a new motherboard as i needed to have pci-e. I never had enough to replace my cpu (a64 3500+).

Anyways since my nforce 4 board has a 24 pin power connector my psu does not. It's a antec truepower 480watt. I know you can use a 20 pin connector but is it wise to?.

Also is my psu decent enough to power the pc. It puts out 28amp on the 12v rail. I think it's enough, but my main concern is the 24pin motherboard connector.

Since spending more money on the pc im hoping i won't need to replace my psu. So im wondering your thoughts on it

cheers

Welcome to the forums. :)

Best bet is to try it and see. You can also try buying a 20 - 24 pin adaptor, that should work. The psu ought to be powerful enough.

Another thing to be aware of, if it hasn't got a 24 pin connector it probably hasn't got a pci-e power connector so you may need an adaptor for that as well.

My 7900gto came with the pci-e adaptor. The psu did power the motherboard. But i had problems installing windows. Was getting random lock ups and bsod while installing the windows files. The part soon after were you pick which drive you want to install windows on.

I thought maybe a ram fault, so tried my old ram and still had problems. So i sent the motherboard back for a replacement.

The parts were not bough from OCUK, but else where so with some luck they will sort me out a repacment and i can get my 7900gto running :)

Just a note your not allowed to mention competitors so remove the mention you made in your last post mate. Just trying to help you not get warnings and bans. :)

As a stop gap I do know that many of the asrock motherboards still use 20 pin connectors (socket 939 with PCI-E).

Tried one of these?
Its cheap enough that its probably worth trying it before you go out and get a new psu.

Did they find the motherboard faulty? If not its probably because it needs the 24 pin connector. In future if you suspect your ram its easiest to run memtest to check it.

I only got the motherboard sent off on friday. But Im sure the board was at fault. I was looking at picking one of them up.

Infact im getting one now as i type this.

Ok, well try it with the new board and 24 pin adaptor (make sure to get the right one, theres also a 24 - 20 pin adaptor which is the wrong one ;) )
Google for memtest, download it and put it on a cd, then make that the first thing you do when you get it built back up. That will then give you the all clear regarding your memory.

I have a boot cd with loads of tools which also has memtest. I have ran it for 2 hours or so and not a problem. Im using the ram in the current machine and im not having any problems.

Yeah i ordered the right one 20pin to 24pin. I should have that tuesday or wednesday.

Now i just need to get my motherboard sorted out so i get enjoy gaming with my new card. It's killing me looking at it sitting in the box

I know the feeling. I had a dead board and it took a month to get back cause i'd left the bracket for my heatsink on it.
Hardware sat there depreciating all that time.

I run an A64 3500 2Gig of geil and a 7800GS+ using an Antec Trueblue 480w.

That PSU is more than beefy enouth for your set up.

Just thought I would update on my motherboard. i got a new board yesterday and got it up and running in no time. My card is running fine and i have ran 3dmark 03, 05 and 06 getting 20k, 9.3, and 4.8 k. I've not had time to get any games installed yet.

I think my scores would be better but my 3500+ is holding me back a bit.
I may look to replace it early next year.

Im now looking forward to playing fear again with my new toy :)
